Hi Matt J ! I have just tried the 352kbps and the difference is minimal if there at all. The Logitech Z-680 is a great sounding system, so I'm generally happy with most recordings. What I think I need is the "right" piece of music to test it out with. I mainly listen to rap/hip-hop and sometimes the production & instrumentation is sub-par, so it doesn't make much difference in my case. Perhaps classical or jazz etc. would give a better picture of the difference between bitrates on my set-up (Logitech Z-680; THX Certified; 505 watts RMS). Thanxz for your interest Matt J ! PS.if I do have a listen to a finely recorded piece of classical or jazz, I will post a follow-up.

Thanxz Matt J. I have purchased a seperate charger for the 1400mah batteries, because as like you, I also am aware that the MZ-NH900 is only? designed to charge the supplied battery which is 900mah - and therefore would only charge a larger capacity batttery only up to the 900ma & leave it only partially charged (at least this what I am lead to believe from reading others experience when charging the higher capacity batteries in the MZ-NH900 unit). Personally, apart from the "slimming" of the unit, I don't know why all the models don't use good old AA batteries instead of the gumstick-type ?

Hi ! I have noticed alot of comment on the topic of "burn-in" when it comes to "wearing" headpones "in". Are we talking about the phones "settling-in" ? What is this all about ?

Hi! I just got a hold of a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-CM7 earphones. A friend got them for me as a present for me when they purchased a pair for themselves (good friend hey!). Anyway, does anybody own a pair ? Or have an opinion on them etc.? Also, what is "burn-in" OR "wearing-in" all about, in regards to earphones/ headphones ?

Differences In NH600, NH700, NHF800, NH900, NH1

Thanx heaps The Low Volta. The EQ thread is very informative. I will give this a go ASAP & let you know what I think. -
Firstly, thanx heaps for the opinions jrhughes, MDGB2 & sebastianbf ! Now an update on my headphone situation: I just got a hold of a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-CM7 by accident. Does anybody have an opinion on these earphones ? I will give them a go & post an opinion. Also, i think I will go with the Senn.PX-100 as an upgrade if the Audi-Technica do not satisfy me. Many thanxz jrhughes, MDGB2 & sebastianbf !

Hi ! Just purchased my 3rd Hi-MD unit (via massive sale at Minidisc Australia) & picked up the MZ-NH900 for $199.00, after earlier purchasing the MZ-NHF800 & the MZ-NH600. I am very pleased with all 3 models, especially the NH900. However, up to now I have been using two sets of headphones: 1. SONY Streetstyle: MDR-G56 (the type that wrap around the back of your head). 2. SONY MDR-E828 bud-style phones. I want to upgrade (although the MDR-E828's provide a sound that I'm reasonably OK with) to take advantage of the HD-digital amplifier in the MZ-NH900. I've been considering 2 different sets: 1. Sennheisser PX-100 2. SONY MDR-EX71SL I have heard great things about both sets, and I know they both sell for approx. $100 Aust. So , is there anybody out there with some advice or experience with both &/or either set ? Update on my headphones situation: I just got a hold of a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-CM7 by accident. Does anybody have an opinion on these earphones ? I will give them a go & post an opinion. Also, i think I will go with the Senn.PX-100 as an upgrade if the Audi-Technica do not satisfy me. Many thanxz jrhughes, MDGB2 & sebastianbf !

I own both the MZ-NH600 & the MZ-NHF800 (as well as the MZ-NH900), & yes, they all have the 6-band EQ. This is good for adjusting the sound for varying recordings & different headphones. Actually, I just prefer the old mega-bass set on level-2 on my MZ-R500. It makes it more simple. Also, can anybody tell which bands to adjust, & by how much, to get the same bass-boost sound as the older style mega-bass sound ? -
Thanxs for your interest Matt J ! No, I haven't tried this yet. Will do so in the next few days, and post a follow-up.

Hi ! I've just recently purchased my 4th MD unit (a MZ-NH900) & it is the first unit that uses the Ni-MH gumstick type batteries. All my previous models use AA's, which are just fine & give excellent playing times. Anyway, what I'm wondering is what is "your" (ie. anybody & everybody) personal experience with playing times with the NH-14WM 1400mah batteries ? What sort of time can I expect when playing at either LP2 (132kbps) OR Hi-SP (256kbps) ? I know the manual gives a crappy time for the supplied NH-10WM (ie. something like 8-10hrs). But what I'm looking for is actual "field" experience ie. your own ideas on probable play times with the 1400mah NH-14WM's.

OK ! We all know Sonicstage has a bundle of problems etc., but what I don't know, is why SONY doesn't seem to know ! I mean, how did they come to the conclusion that the program was acceptable ? Don't they trial programs with "mock" consumers initially to get feedback etc.? Why did they not take a look around & see what other companies were programming ? Perhaps there is a perfectly good answer to this ? Then again, perhaps not ?

Really it comes down to what you are willing to accept in terms of sound quality etc. AND what HEADPHONES you are using !!! You also need to consider disc capacity. So it's a trade off between quality & space. Personally, I am happy to encode at 132kbps (LP2) using my SONY Streetstyle headphones. If at some point in the future I improve my headphones, I will perhaps be able to distinguish between the bitrate I am now using (132kbps) & the higher bitrates. However, at the moment, I cannot. However, if your talking about using your line-out and connecting your Hi-MD unit to a good amp & a good set of speakers, then I consider Hi-SP (256kbps) to be more than acceptable. I plug my MZ-NH900 (using the line-out option) into my Logitech Z-680 5.1 Surround system, which is THX-certified & pumps out approx. 500 Watts RMS, and play it in double stereo mode (ie. four speakers - 2 on each side) - and the sound is awesome. The bass is THUMPING, without being distorted - and the highs & mid-ranges are beautifully balanced.

Many thanks Greenmachine.

My mistake ! I guess I must be dreaming ! Seriously though, I could have sworn that I have seen pics etc. of them whilst browing the net. Thanks for bringing me into the "know". If only the power of belief held some real power !

I have recently purchased a Sony BC-7DC2 Ni-MH battery charger (it can charge 2 Sony Ni-14WM 1400mah batteries) & I am having problems with the charging times. The LED lights on my unit come on to indicate that charging is in progress (orange lights) - however, they do not change colour or turn off etc. when the charge cycle is complete. In fact I have no way of knowing when the batteries are fully charged, short of trying various charge times & checking the battery indicator in my Hi-MD unit. I left the charger going for 20 hours & it did not turn off automatically etc. Personally, I think if I just leave it charging, the lights will stay on & charging will continue until the batteries swell & burst etc. Does anybody know how long a charge-cycle with the Sony BC-7DC2 for two 1400mah Ni-MH batteries is ? The chargers specs. are: Input: AC 115 - 230V 7 VA 50/60Hz Output: 1.2V 0.2A (or 200mah) And the batteries being charged are the Sony Ni-14WM 1400mah batteries. PS. I have heard that because the output of the charger is 200mah & the batteries being charged are 1400mah that it should take approx. 7 hours to fully charge. If this is correct do you double the charge time because there are 2 batteries being charged, OR halve the charge time for one battery ? OR is it 7 hours irregardless of whether there are 1 or 2 batteries being charged ? Can anybody help ?

Hi! Does anybody know whether or not the 1st Generation Hi-MD units eg. MZ-NH900, MZ-NHF800 etc. are able to record on and/or play the 2GB blank MD's ? 2GB blanks are not available in Australia & I have a ton of 1GB blanks, but would eventually love to get a hold of several 2GB blanks for my MZ-NH900, MZ-NHF800 & MZ-NH600 Hi-MD units.

Greenmachine is spot on. The sound quality is the same, if using the same bitrate, using either 1GB blanks OR 80min blanks. The only difference is the amount of storage capacity that you have (1GB blanks leave the rest for dead!) Also, does anybody know if the 2GB blanks (not available in Australia) are able to be used in the 1st Generation Hi-MD recorders such as the MZ-Nh900, MZ-NHF800 etc.?

Can anyone offer any help? My Sony MZ R500 MD Unit has lately started playing up. It appears to record fine in any mode ie. standard, LP2 or LP4 ... but on playback, about halfway through the disc, the counter will stop moving foward, the indicator will show that the disc is spinning, there is NO sound - basically it just won't move foward. Has anyone encountered this problem before ? Is it serious ? I've tried a lens cleaning unit .... But nothing! .... any help would be appreciated.
