  1. I'm not sure you can't do the SS backup/restore thing, even if the authentication server is down. I have done several backups/restores to a different computer this year (the last about a week ago), and everything still seems to work. Obviously, the backup/restore procedure cannot now be recommended as a reliable way of archiving /copying files between computers, but there at least seems to be some life it it.
  2. That's right, that's my main use for the B10. It all goes a bit wobbly at the higher settings, but still playable. Quite a brilliant implementation of the pitch (speed) control.
  3. It's great for music learning and practice - difficult music passages can be slowed down, or for speeding up slow tracks if you fancy playing faster, without changing the musical pitch. Quite a bit in fact, more than some 'professional' music trainers, eg. Tascam and Marantz. It can also be used for audio transcription and language learning.
  4. They certainly knew how to knock a tune or two out in those days. The 18th century was when music was defined for me. I've never really got the hang of the later classical stuff. Myabe one day.
  5. Indeed, I almost always ignore what comes out of Gracenote/CDDB. My system is something like: Composer/Artist - Work/Track Title - Movement - Recording artist, which is quite character heavy. Probably spend half my spare time titling, which is sad. The recording part is relatively straighforward.
  6. Yes, I always title each and every track, group and the disc name. Sonicstage, for all it's faults, is for me the best (and only) way of titling tracks & discs. Before that it was by remote and keyboard, but found it too irksome, slow, and error prone, once PC titling was available. Only tried titling on a portable once and that was enough... Shame about the character limit with legacy, I often hit that with LP2 recordings, particularly with 'classical' music.
  7. Blimey... a shaving forum. And they say MD users are weird...
  8. sfbp - I have changed my email to a current one, thanks. B
  9. The eBay trader was based in Hampshire, UK. Bought my two B10's from them in May, and to be honest it was a perfect transaction, very quick. They don't seem to have any items at all for sale at the moment though. Skogen's deal is just as good though, I paid £69 for each, plus p & p.
  10. I just use 'safety' razors, and even then manage to get numerous cuts and nicks when not careful. ie. in a hurry, which is usually the case. I can't imagine what damage one of those straight razors would do...
  11. BTW, the MD-MS702 manual can be found here, if that's any help.
  12. I'd be interested too, for that price. I probably don't really need another one as I have 5 B10's already (at the last count), but they really are very useful to me..
  13. Sadly an MZ-RH10 can't upload your SP recordings to PC - only the RH1 (or M200) can do this. Perhaps you were thinking of purchasing the RH1 and ended up with an RH10 instead, which is unfortunate...?
  14. Lucky blighter! Congratulations on your find...
  15. Not sure about the first questio, but you can certainly move any files in Sonicstage to any folder on your PC's hard drive, or indeed your whole music library. Just select the files you want, right click and select the Move File option.
  16. Apparently The NW-MS11 can only play Sony's ATRAC format files, and not MP3 other formats directly. If your sister has the software CD (either Open MG or Sonicstage) that came with the walkman that may be able to convert your MP3's to ATRAC, and in any case you'll need that for transferring music to your walkman.
  17. How about using CD-R's instead of RW's? Most players can read CD-R's even if not RW's. Obviously they're not re-usable, but they're cheap(er), faster to write to, and you could keep the CD-R as a backup. Just a thought, mind you.
  18. I'm defintiely repeating myself, but here goes: A 'business' unit like the MZ-B10, but for Hi-MD and with more musician-friendly features found on other digital recorders (tuner, metronome, key change) Sony decks - eg. MDS-JB980 for Hi-MD Higher capacity disks, eg. 2GB+ Don't need video, net, games etc but if others want it then fine.
  19. It's never too late Have you lost your MD virginity yet or are planning to...? Edit: Oh I see you have plenty of MD toys...
  20. The odd live concert, though not much lately, but I do record my own musical efforts, mostly flute and guitar/drums for accompaniment purposes. My MZ-B10 (of which I have acquired 2 more recently) is an invaluable tool for this purpose.
  21. No problem, hope it work out well. If you go for the R90/91, make sure they include the accessories, eg. the external AA battery pack is invaluable when out and about, as this is a gumstick battery model.
  22. Well, it would get the job done for basic recording, no bells and whistles, or not too many. At $20 for an MD recorder with mic-in you can't really go wrong...
  23. A simple volume control wouldn't supply any extra power - you'd need a powered mic pre-amp, or a battery box (for recording loud concerts). A unit with a mic input would be worth considering, and save the hassle of extra cables, batteries etc.. Sony's have very good mic pre-amps, and a Hi-MD recorder such as the MZ-NH700 is also able to upload recordings to a PC, unlike the older ones you linked to.
  24. Yes they do, at least the IM-DR400 snd 420 did. I was never knocked out by the 1-bit sound, maybe just on these machines, but always preferred the Sony sound signature to all my Sharps. BTW, I've still got a 4-3 pole adapter if anyone's interested...
  25. Mine came before yours (posted same day), but then again I do live in the UK.. Actually ordered two of them, hoping that this will keep me going forever in MD. Glad to hear that Guitarfxr posted up a good little recommendation of the B10, kind of justifies the expense, if that's needed. If only Sony had made a Hi-MD version, but these little beauties are just about perfect anyways...
