As a recorder, I've yet to find anything that matches MD. I don't trust anything based on a hard-drive as a field recorder, and none of the flash-drive units have the same features. So, as long as there are blanks, I'll stick with MD in that role. As a player, I still prefer the output quality of MD to any other compressed format. Part of it is the fact that (with one exception), I have yet to find any DAP that generates an output that is free of static and/or hiss. Most seem to be subtly EQ'ed as well, something I don't like. It seems like the current philosophy is that the quality of the amp doesn't matter as much as the amount of memory or colors displayed on screen. Thanks and all, but MD still has its priorities straight; it's about sound. I've yet to find a DAP that sounds as good as my Sharp units. My only complaint is SonicStage. I really, really, really wish there was a way to transfer files a) without having to use that program, and without having to boot into Windows. As a result, only about 5% of my record collection is on MD at any given time. As long as I'm listening to that, I prefer MD. However, if I want to listen to something that isn't on MD, I'll dig up the Rio Karma. Just more convenient. Of course, that's not a big issue to me, since I've always considered MD as a replacement (and a superior one) to tape. Occasional real-time recording or a semi-weekly foray into SonicStage isn't that big of a deal. In fact, before the first high-capacity DAP's came out, I never realized I was being "inconvenienced" by not having near-instant transfers So, I'll be sticking with it as long as I have blanks. When those run out, I'll still stick with it, just to spite the young people and their awful 6-Petabyte iPod Quantums.

Kinda like the "heat death" theory for the end of the universe. The question is, "what constitutes 'dead'?" You can place markers along the way at several points in history and say, "that's when MD died." For some folks, it's back in the mid-to-late 1990's, when prerecorded discs were discontinued by domestic music labels. For others, it might be when units stopped showing up in American stores. I was tempted to make the claim when I could no longer find blanks locally. Then Hi-MD was announced. That appears to have been the last gasp, but as long as I've got one or two working units, and the media is still available online, I'm covered. ...which brings up an odd head-scratcher: if it weren't for internet commerce, where WOULD MD be these days?

Try clearing your browser history. It may still have the old IP address cached.

Yep, it's back up. Good thing, too. I thought I was gonna have to get a life or something...

Yeah, I've always wondered what that is. It looks like a Molar wearing a hat.

FWIW, I've got a meager gallery of it here.

What a coincidence! I was listening to Moanin' at work today. Still my favorite of his. Listening to Jimmy Smith's The Sermon! at the moment. 256kbps>>MZ-EH1>>Grado SR60

It's like a family reunion! We can all get wasted on peach Schnapps and yell at each other! Oh, well I guess it's not like MY family reunions In other news, there's a nice article here about Hi-MD.

Would you trade in your SONY MD Player for an IPOD?

Nope. I can actually hear the difference between high-bitrate ATRAC and high-bitrate mp3, and I prefer ATRAC.I still use my MD as a field recorder, and I like having the versatility.Mp3 players, at least the HDD ones, aren't as resilient in my experience. -
Just a warning about this seller. He has been banned from T-Station for fraudulent selling under the names Graphis_7 and Graphis_8. I have not done business with him, nor have I ever communicated with him directly. However, I posted on T-Station regarding problems with a seller on eBay, and under the name graphisphos-7, he sent harassing messages to the seller, nearly wrecking any chance I had of working things out. I messaged him requesting an explanation, and he declined to respond. I have since contacted eBay, and he has changed his ID there.

Funny, I recently got ahold of an E630 and was surprised to find it not listed in the browser. What is the process to adding new entries?

Grado SR60: everyone should own a pair. Pretty accurate across the whole range, with a nice punch and a wide soundstage. They've got good bass response; it's just not as echoey as IEMS. JVC FX77: a recent addition for me. The SL version are Japan-only, but AudioCubes has them. Cheap, but excellent groovalizers. Fit and seal can be a bit fiddly, but they sit comfortably, and bass response is huge. Mids are just a hair recessed but are clear, as are the upper registers. A bit claustrophobic for classical, but excellent for electronic/rock. Sony EX90: these singlehandedly make up for the sins of the EX71. Excellent highs and mids, and bass is accurate and tight. A bit pricey but worth it. Isolation is so-so, but they're an easy fit. -
Of course, the real question is, "when and where can I get these?"

Wow. I got some of the blue "power line" ones a couple of years ago, but I was unaware of the others in the series. I'd LOVE to get ahold of some! Any idea how to find them, or would you perhaps have a couple of extras you could be persuaded to part with?
