Davew
Hi The 5 way control on the nhf800, and probably the 700 too: When you press it, it has the play function, does anyone know why sony have not given it the pause function as well? It's a real pain when it's in my pocket and i'm not using the remote, to pause it quickly. cos i'm searching around for the very small pause button and it would be really handy just to press the stick! I think they might not of made it do pause too becuase you could accidentally pause it when you're changing the volume, but i think that is definately an acceptable risk! what do people think?? mutant1345
i dont know about the 800 too muc but isnt that button also the enter button... that would make that little button do three functions enter play and pause.....this could be possible but a little bit difficult to pause while navigating through this and whatnot i dont know but it could be something along those lines
Davew
hmm yeah, but you could still have the pause button there, I just think that when you're not in the menus, it would be useful to give the stick the pause function. It also has the bookmark function if you hold it down for a couple of seconds, but I can't really see any problems with that, since when you're just playing something normally, nothing at all happens if you press the stick, so why not use that spare capacity?? xispe
i have to say that i don't like much this 5 way control... many times i just want to raise the volume, and when i'm not looking at the unit, i end up to changing the track back or forth... oh damn. I didn't had such problems with my mz-r70
KJ_Palmer
I don't really use the 5 way control thing much on my NH900, it's far too fiddly. Mostly use the remote to start/stop etc. and my headphone's in-line volume control for, er, controlling volume...
aeriyn
what the hell is a 5-way control thingy? As far as I knew all the device came with was that big fat remote. Edit: Ohhhh. *dumb* I get it now. The 5-way control pad on the MD unit itself. Well, wanna hear the real reason there's no pause function on it? Because of the unit's ability to record. To put it into record-pause mode, the pause and play buttons must be separate. At least, that's how I believe it to be. On all MD downloaders and players I've seen, the play/pause button were one and the same, but always separate on recording units.
Davew
what i mean is, that pressing the stick could make it pause as well as the pause button, but only when you're playing music, not in record mode or when you hold the record button. just thought it would be useful, that's all! dave_bass5
On the 900 if you have quick start enabled stoping and starting is very quick anyway. i have never used the pause button except for setting the rec level. Dave.
KJ_Palmer
It's just 'bad' (in users terms) design/ergonomics - no-one thought of it or bothered to implement it if they did. Too bad, maybe the next generation will have it, maybe not, after all there already is a pause button on the unit, quite a big one on the NH900... mutant1345
haha i havnt used the 5 way control in forever anyways, i prefer the remote much better....------------------the play and pause button ARE the same on the remote ...lol
Davew
yeah I always use the remote when I can, i think the layout is very good, It's quite big though, but at least it seems robust! and tho I would like it if I could press the 5 way stick to pause, whenever I use the stick I always change track when I don't mean to because the recorder is on its side or something confusing like that! yes, I agree Bad design sony. aeriyn
Sony's designs are pretty hit-and-miss when it comes to ergonomics and ease of use. Point in case: the rocker bar on the N1. Ugh. Try to put THAT unit in record-pause mode. Makes my little fingers hurt just thinking about it. I think Japanese manufacturers, but Sony in particular, are so obsessed with making things very small that they forget about things such as ergonomics and sound quality. Point in case: N10. While the control scheme was easy to use and a great improvement on the N1 and successive units... it sounds like mud. Sony = the Japanese word for shortsightedness.
