Well........this is still kind of veuge

but i would say if you are just looking for a player only unit and have no needs for recording elswise......a good mp3 player with a tuner would suite you just fine.....however if you would llike to record things....ets..... himd is the proper choice.

and if you think hi-md is right then the 800 model has a tuner remote, and all the recording features

its all on spacific needs though.....

He said under $300. That automatically leaves out all HDD-MP3 players and leaves only the NHD600D among Hi-MD players.

For that money I'd recommend a flash MP3 player such as those made by BenQ, or an MP3-CD player.

ehmm.

I would just like to point out Amazon to you NRen:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...ronics&n=516878

which has ipod minis for $249, which if my maths is correct, is

a whole $51 less than the ammount Helix is looking to spend.

Looks a good deal Helix, If I wanted to get one from Amazon UK I would be looking at £175, which is about $315! what better deals the US gets...

Hope this is helpful for your decision helix

Let's get serious here I say...

Minidisc: Pro:

Good for recording, good soundquality, cheap durable media, Capacity can be expanded indefinitely by buying more discs and generally good to excellent running times per battery charge.

Contra: SonicStage, the supplied software for transferring. Marcnets software alleviates that a bit.

MP3-Player: Pro: Higher initial capacity, easier music transfer.

Contra: Capacity either not expandable or if expandable, the media is prohibitively expensive, most MP3 players cannot record through line/mic/optical, most of those which can record standalone deliver lousy results, mediocre to lousy running times per battery charge, Harddisk-based players are more sensitive to mechanical shock.

Basically, if you have tons of music, that you want to take with you all at once, then a harddisk-mp3-player might be the right choice, in most other cases, a Hi-MD recorder seems to be the better choice. It is just more flexible...
