Hello,

My Sonicstage and simple burner both crash when a minidisc is connected to the pc. This has only recently started occuring so its possibly something else that is installed on the pc that is causing this.

The minidisc is a MZ-NH700 and the windows version is XP service pack 1.

I was using Sonicstage 2.0 (and simple burner) fine until they started doing this. I have uninstalled ss2.0 and reinstalled from the cd that came with the minidisc. I have also installed ss2.1 from sony connect (I live in europe) but the problem is still occuring.

Both applications start fine, but if I connect my minidisc they now crash. Or if the minidisc is connected before they start they crash as soon as they check the minidisc. I have tried using various discs formated to Hi-MD but it doesnt appear to be anything on the disc that is causing the problem. This discs still play fine and I can access the data on the disc.

When simple burner crashes the message is:

NetMDSB.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x7fffffff" referenced memory at "0x7fffffff". The memory could not be read
When Sonicstage starts the message is
Omjbox.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x6c371351" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be read

If anybody has experienced this or knows how to fix this I would be grateful.

Regards

David

I'd check for adware/spyware with something like Ad-Aware [ http://www.lavasoft.de ] or Spybot search and destroy.

Also, if you installed any other USB devices recently, look to software related to those as a possible culprit.

And, unless you use the Connect service in Europe [or anywhere other than the US], you should try updating to SS 2.2 after reinstalling per Kurisu's advice.

Thanks for the replies.

I have seen this uninstall method suggested for other issue so I had tried it.

However I did it again and then installed sonic stage 2.1 and the problem still occurs.

I havent installed any other usb devices so it cant be that.

I doubt spyware would do this but I'll scan anyway.

I dont think ss2.2 will make much difference. Sonic stage 2.0 worked fine for several months.

I work occasionally as a computer technician, mostly doing software/OS troubleshooting. In recent times, I'd estimate that 90-95% of the sudden "my xx software/device isn't working" or "my system is slower than molasses in january on the north pole" problems are caused by either adware or spyware.

Have you installed any other software recently? Windows updates? Updated your BIOS? Installed other new non-USB hardware? Any changes at all that you've made to your system, however small?

You know, we *should* start charging Sony for all the tech support that's being provided to fix the problems their bug-ridden software causes.

Erm, back on topic. Dave, did you make sure to go into the registry like the SS FAQ states? I didn't do it on my brother's laptop, and was causing him a bit of trouble until I did.

Patvan,

Spot on! I uninstalled windows update KB840987, restarted and it works fine. I thought it may be one the windows updates but I didnt know where to start tracking it down.

Thanks to everybody else who made suggestions. Its a sad state of affairs that we have to turn the support of enthusiasts rather than sonys technical support.

Thanks again

david

EDIT:

Seroka2, I uninstalled the update by going to control panel then add/remove programs. and then removed 'Windows Update KB840987'.

Good luck!
