Problem transferring MP3's to MZ-NH600D

Hi all,

When I convert an MP3 to Atrac format and transfer the Atrac file using SonicStage to my Hi-MD player (MZ-NH600D), everything *seems* to go fine.

But when the player will try to play the file, well, it won't play. The player shows that it is trying to read the file, but after about 10 seconds, it stops trying.

I don't have this problem if I convert an MP3 to WAV first using a third party program and then convert to Atrac, transfer using SonicStage and play it. However, converting to WAV makes the process much longer from my experiences and is a hassle. First convert to WAV which takes ample time. Then convert the WAV file to Atrac3Plus, which takes much, much, much longer than converting an MP3 to Atrac3Plus.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum.

More than likely they are in an MP3 format that SonicStage cant handle.

What version of SS (Sonic Stage) are you using? if its 2.0 or lower then upgrade from www.connect.com

Failing this there was a post about an MP3 > Atrac converter on this board somewhere (also check minidisct as I spotted your post there as well). I have not tried this as all my MP3's I convert to an audio CD image & mount using Daemon tools, this then gives me the correct track listing from CDDB.

If all of these functions fail, you have a weird MP3 format & will have to go the long way around.

Thanks for the welcome :-)

I am using SonicStage 2.2. I have tried several different MP3's and they all give me the same problem. Maybe I'll try the MP3 to Atrac converter if I can find it.

Thanks.

EDIT: Just tried the Sony MP3 conversion tool, and when I load and transfer the files with SonicStage, it says the files cannot be transferred. It's amazing, because I have over a 1000 MP3's and I have tried over a hundred different ones, from different sources, different bitrates and everything.

to my knowledge mp3s over 320 kbps and under 128 kbps can not be transfered to players because sonic stage can not handle the straining conversion....

as for advice on this, there are dozens of people that have this problem but you might want to uninstall sonic stage and reinstall it for a fresh start....

either that or search for a mp3 encoder to make yer mp3s changed to a diferent bitrate so sonic stage might be able to understand it

these are my suggestion so use them or not........good luck!

IIRC, the free version of MusicMatch Jukebox will allow you to convert MP3's to wav, or mp3 with another bitrate. Try it, and then import those WAVs or "cooked" mp3's into SonicJunk. Also, I suggest you convert the files before transferring. (Look around in the help file, or ask how to do it) That way you don't force the program to do that much work while transferring.

Never knew that. However, almost all of my MP3's are 128kbp, or 192kbps.

Okay I will try that and post an update.

I'll try that too.

Thanks a lot! :-)

EDIT: I uninstalled SonicStage (manually removed: registry entires, openmg from add/remove programs, all sony directories) and I still have the same problem :-( That took a while to do too.

I'll try this out as you and mutant1345 suggested. Thanks for naming a program, because a lot of the ones I have found are not freeware.

Also, I suggest you convert the files before transferring. (Look around in the help file, or ask how to do it) That way you don't force the program to do that much work while transferring.

If what you mean is this, I tried it:

- using the Sony MP3 Conversion Tool

- right clicking a file in SonicStage, selecting convert format and convert a file to whatever format

Everything converts nicely, and transfers to my player, but when I try to play the file, it doesn't play.

Thanks for the suggestions:)

Okay. I tried MusicMatch Jukebox and converted a 192kbps MP3 to 128kbps. I still have the same problem. This is unbelievable. I went out thinking there's maybe something wrong with my player so I bought another MZ-NH600D to test out, and the same problem. Now I have two players that won't take MP3's.

:'-( x 10000

Maybe there's a problem with SonicStooge. Is there anyway that I can transfer the tracks without SonicStooge? I can convert to oma using the Sony MP3 Conversion Tool and then transfer the files myself.

I found the problem, but have no idea how to solve it. No matter what I use to convert -- SonicStage or Sony MP3 Conversion Tool -- I will be told that conversion was successful, but the OMA filesize ends up being 4,096 bytes! In other words, 0MB's. I tried this with a couple of MP3's. So it's definitely a software conversion problem.

I already tried uninstalling all OpenMG software and SonicStage.

Any ideas?

EDIT: I just sent email to Sony Connect customer support. Hopefully they'll know something.

What mp3 codecs are installed on your system? i.e. if you open windows media player, what mp3 codec is it using?

You can also find this out in the sounds and multimedia things in your control panel, under the tab 'hardware' I believe, there should be an entry for 'codecs'. It will tell you what codecs are installed.

Perhaps you need to install a better codec. I have had SS refuse to encode a couple of files in total so far, never had the VBR problem people talk about, only problems with really old encoded stuff.

Thanks for the reply. I have the "Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec". When I go to the about option for the codec, it tells me I have MP3 version 1.9 (Build 305).

Which codec are you using? I want to try the exact same one.

Thanks again.
