bhangraman
KB887811 deals with the problem. To download it separately, you'll need to 'validate' your copy of Windows XP and you must not be using non-IE browsers.
sknight
Crap, how do I validate my copy of XP? Shoot. Now I gotta look for my paperwork. I bet I don't even have it. Now bring me up to speed because I'm only a week into Hi/Net MD. What will the fix get me and where is it available?
mrsoul
To Validate your copy, you usually have to insert your Installation CD. Not sure how this will fix the Hotfix :-)

doclloyd
Interesting that they don't have an answer for 2000 machines. At least they've found a way to fix their hotfix I'll be patiently waiting.. not that it matters much, since I messed with the ss database. bhangraman
I've just been informed that you don't have to validate windows to download it. Sorry if it's caused any panic.

Sorry if it's caused any panic. You can't use Windows Update with XP Home without it being validated, AFAIK. That doesn't mean you can't dl just the hotfix, though. sknight
I downloaded it and it gave me the option to not validate, so I chose that. It simply said that validating allows faster updates at later times.
b.e.wilson
If you've already got Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed on your computer, you don't need this hotfix.

aeriyn
>.> <.< I love my FCCC copy of Windows XP Professional. "Validate" doesn't even exist. I bought a bunch of software when I was a student at Shasta Community College through this thing called the Foundation for California Community Colleges; it meant, 75% discounts on all software, and without all the strange restrictions and anti-piracy measures. I don't even need to put in the CD-key for most of my stuff...

Qwakrz
Aeriyn, you should try my uni. I can obtain XP, Server 2000 / 2003 all for free as I am on a computing course (Computer Systems & Networks). However I also work for an employer on placement that gives XP and Office to employee's for free. & before anyone asks I cant get free copies for anyone else. aeriyn
Sorry to hear that your college didn't join up. Hacked OS = yum.
