Christopher
I'm really starting to get fed up with my current job. I have been working for a small cable internet service provider here in Maryland for more than a year, doing technical support. My position is part time, from 3pm - 10pm on Monday + Wednesday, 3:30 - midnight on Saturday and Sunday. Not the best hours, but I've adjusted my life accordingly and things were okay. The pay is above average and I get free cable television [hdtv as well] and free cable internet [3.2mbps down/256kbps up].So, a new year and some positions have been shifted and one fellow was let go. The daytime second shift, which is from 3pm - midnight, is now available. This is a full time shift. My boss has informed me that they now want me to work from 3-10pm on Monday - Wednesday, 4-10pm on Thursday and Friday. I'm not happy with such. This is the second time I've been overlooked on a full time position. A full time shift had opened from 7am-3pm months ago and was given to my former weekend co-worker. He was the bloke who I mentioned had got canned. His nomination to recieve the position initally was a little hard for me to swallow, but I accepted it and moved on. I trained a new person in his place during the weekends and she is now exceling only after a few weeks. So, it seems like they want to hire someone new for the full time shift that runs from 3 pm - midnight. I have worked my ass off for a year plus and I get a few more hours, just slipping under the full time radar; I need this insurance, I need the respect that I've been working for. I cannot believe that they are going to hire someone new in a position that I would do exceptionally in.I'm going to have a meeting with my boss on Monday and find out why I have not been chosen again for a full time position. I will not be obtrusive in my words, but this is seriously starting to bother me and I need to know the truth.p.s. At least this new shift, whatever it may be, will stop this working on the weekend business. What a waste of my life.
Fat Tires
Good luck with the job Chris. I know how hard it is to get the respect you deserve. I was in a similar position a few years ago when I was working the technical support desk for a major PC maker. I also worked the 2nd shift, but I was full-time. I really wanted to work days because my wife also worked days in her job. Sadly, my company kept giving day shifts to other workers and kept me on nights. They did promote me and give me cool duties, like mentoring new hires (I was on the phone a lot less), but I really wanted to work similar hours to my wife. I didn't get what I wanted until I left the company for a better job. I hope that your situation works out better.
ROMBUSTERS
yes i have witnessed this happen a lot at my job and some people in higher positions just dont seem to get it. but im sure you'll get it next time (especially if you start asking for more hours )
Bananatree
Oi, I know how you feel mate.Personally, at the bar I work at, they hired a bunch of new Bartenders who know crap all about how to bartend, while I've been working my tail off trying to learn the trade of bartending.Whatever, I'm going to quit and work at Toys 'r' Us anyways (hopefully). Rumz
Sounds like poor management to me, which is unfortunate but seems to plague a lot of businesses (even good ones). Where I work if such a full time position opened up they'd likely post a job opening and let current employees have a chance at it. Good luck with the meeting with your boss, man. Christopher
Seems like this is a somewhat common problem with people and their workplace. Alternatively, I've been thinking about this and I keep wondering if there is issues with my preformance and that is why I'm being overlooked. I've had a few negative comments here and there concerning my interactions with customers, but that is natural in customer service situations, and I can say confidentally that I have been working on that and made signifigant progress. Regardless, the gears at this job turn slowly, and I'm starting to doubt that a meeting with my boss would really inspire any alterations to my inevitable part-time fate. It's so damn hard for me to swallow this for some reason, and I feel like I've lost alot of motivation at the workplace now. Additionally, alot of my co-workers are surprised that I'm not getting the shift. It's very easy for my slight obsessive compulsive nature to find faults within myself before finding faults within others. atrain
how about the peircing? they cool with alternative lifestylez? just kidding there but do you think age comes into it at all?
Christopher
The piercing does not seem to be an issue at all as far as I know, as I never venture to represent the company outside of the cubicle. I was also featured in a commercial, but the piercing isn't noticeable in such but it does display that they are comfortable as they didn't tell me to take it out before shooting.I have considered the age gap. I am only 20, whereas all of my other co-workers are 25 and beyond. But age shouldn't be relevant in this, should it? Not to be pretentious, but I've set the standard in our group for how to diagnosis virus related calls and many other issues that are commonplace. My plan(s) of attack have been widely adopted with fellow co-workers and it is not uncommon for them to come to me for tips and stuff. dex Otaku
Simple advice: be direct, and tell them you're interested ni the position, and that they could hire someone new in your old one. At the very least, put together an updated resumé and then hand in in to them as applying for that position. If you show interest, they're likely to notice. aihe
Hi Kurisu, I wonder if you are familiar with the old saying "It's not what you know, it's not who you know, it's who you blow." After spending 12 years working for one of the largest companies (at the time 1976 - 1988) in this country, seeing less qualified people promoted or given cushy duties was commonplace for me. Of course my being outspoken, with a tendency to use foul language and heavily tattooed wasn't exactly the best thing to be either. But when the hard jobs were being handed out, when so called superiors needed help or when there were new people to train - I was the first to be called on.All kidding aside, being direct is excellent advice. Being unappreciated and more to the point being unhappy at work, sooner or later will impact into your private life. Knowing exactly where you stand might give you a better idea of your own future plans. Whatever you do think long and hard first - don't do anything in the heat of the moment. Christopher
I was direct with her and she told me the reason why I'm in this new part-time position on the weekdays only is so she can observe me better - since I work those wacky hours, she's had little time to watch me in action. She informed me the reason why I was not promoted to full time was because of a few prior complaints from customers. I find this unbelieveable that she would bias her opinion off disgruntled customers and not my real preformance. She will be pretty surprised when she sees how proficient and kind I am when she does "observe" me in this new shift.Nonetheless, they are hiring someone new for the full time shift during the weekdays. I suppose the next time a full time shift opens during the weekdays, I will get it. This is still very disappointing to me, but alas, something new has come before me tonight..I am moving back down to Georgia and I will be attending college on my Mother's bill. Since I have pre-existing full schloarships, she will pay up front and get reimbursed when each semester is done. So, screw this job, I'm going to college within this year! Fat Tires
Well, that's awesome Chris. Getting your education completed will be a big step towards getting you where you will want to be in life. Are you going to GA alone, or is your girl going with you?I wish you all the best on this new endeavor.
aeriyn
I've noticed that at my job, the general manager tends to notice the achievements of the general screw-ups... like, when they do a good job in the midst of all their whining and complaining and bullshitting, he notices it more than he notices my continual good work.He takes my proficiency for granted, and praises the slackers when they actually do a good job for a change. I come in five minutes late once this last week because my alarm clock mysteriously started ringing at random times instead of when I set it, and he downs on me for it, but still hasn't fired the guy who regularly comes in a half hour late.Poor management... I'm glad (and so is everyone else) that he's leaving next month. It'd be nice if they picked me to replace him, since out of the two people who has been here the longest, I'm the only one with a flexible enough schedule (the other manager choice is going to nursing school and can't work the extended hours). atrain
congratulations boss. any idea what you're studying yet? can we stereotype you as comp sci/ e/eng? or business?
Christopher
Engineering is looking mighty attractive. Why go CompSci when all the jobs have been exported to India. As for my girlfriend, no, she won't be coming with me.This is a very hard decision for me to make, but I dropped my life to move up here before, I can do it again I suppose. mrsoul
Chris-Hey, life is opening a new door, kick it down and step through! Maybe we can catch a Derek Trucks show in Georgia sometime since that is their home territory! Get in touch when you get settled down South. Hey, I just got my Master's in May and it really makes a difference to some folks who have the power if you have certain initials behind your name... and a difference to your checking account They are actually let me do the things I have talked about for years (I was a staff RN for 5 years and now I am the Nursing Informatics Coordinator). Without that extra degree, it wouldn't be happening. It will be to your advantage in the long run. It wasn't the easiest thing to do, work fulltime and go to school "fooltime" with a wife and 2 little boys. It won't be the easiest thing for you but trust me, you will have it made in the shade. Take advantage of the new opportunity and enjoy school this time around Good luck and keep us posted.M Edited January 12, 2005 by mrsoul
Christopher
Thanks for the kind words, boss. I'm now having trouble picking out what I want to do, maybe I should become an engineer after all so I can correct what is going on with Sony and Hi-MD..that'd be amusing, but probably require not an Engineer, but an act of God.. Bananatree
Yeah Chris! I deffinately think you should go back to school... you don't want this to turn out like "Clerks" do you?
Christopher
Turning out like Clerks wouldn't be too bad..But yeah, I wanted to ping this back up and say that I was accepted into college and I'm moving down not to long from now! This is going to be like v. 2 of my old life, hopefully it won't be lame. I feel good about this shift, but it makes me sad at the same time, growing older..Such thoughts at twenty, I'll tell ya. btw, work has been funny lately. My boss and my other co-workers are now having problems being agreeable on a wide scale of issues throughout the day. It's sorta like the whole office is having a falling out. I sit back and observe it and wear a sly grin as I was the one who was angsty about her a month ago..now everyone is catching up. Typical work day, I suppose.
