Kaotic
by any chance, have you read the manual that comes with the unit? specifically on the topic of recording modes. if not, go do that now!!! if you still have no clue after reading thru the manual, people here will be happy to help you. sfphoto
Bought of a m. No box no manual etc.←http://esupport.sony.com/perl/modelpage.pl...=EN&mdl=MZNF610this has the link to the user manual. If you didn't recieve software with your MD, you may need to dig around to look for the Sonicstage and driver software.I have the same one . . . record using LP4 to get 5 hours - Hit MENU, use the Fast foward arrow to go to R-SET, hit ENTER - arrow to R-MODE - you have the choice of SP, LP2 or LP4 - hit enter for your choice. dex Otaku
Note that LP4 is of pretty dismal quality.
dvallere
I must disagree, Dex, I can't hear any difference between SP and LP4 for music.
KJ_Palmer
Surely you can tell some difference between SP and LP4, Dvallere... Agreed that LP4 might sound acceptable to many - I use it sometimes myself even for classical music, but unless your 'SP' is actually fake SP -ie. LP2, I would have thought the difference would be plain, at least through reasonable ear/headphones...
aeriyn
I must disagree, Dex, I can't hear any difference between SP and LP4 for music.←You're probably transcoding 128kbps MP3 to ATRAC. Of course SP and LP4 will sound very similar if you do this.Try making two separate recordings directly from a CD, one in real-time SP mode and one in real-time LP4 mode. Don't use SonicStage. Then have a listen, and tell me what you think.Although, if your headphones are not good enough, you may not be able to tell much of a difference... ROMBUSTERS
LP4 sounds very bad, although i say that after i bought a HiMD unit and actually had enough disc space to care...
dvallere
I used to use SP on my old (pre-MDLP) recorder - optical out from my bookshelf system to the portable. Now I use LP2 or LP4 (with Sonic Stage) on my NZ-707. All my listening is done in the car - maybe five hours a year, I listen to a disc on my portable - and I don't notice a difference. Guess I should have qualified that.Though I may test this tonight. I'll report back.
ROMBUSTERS
heh the worst thing you could probably do is look for bad compression in a song, then everytime its played you'll think about nothing but thatit keeps me awake at night :S

Compressed audio is great for the car though. With all the other noise you get while driving, you don't exactly need high quality audio compression.
