hanz0 Posted January 20, 2005 Report Share Posted January 20, 2005 im gonna be recording a show. it its gonna have to be incognito. i know i will be close to the stage. are the security people on the look out for people wearing mics? im thinking theyre mostly there to keep the crowd in control. my plan is to clip the mics to my lapels, when the lights get low. but considering the fact that i may be close to security, my question is, is this the best place to put my mics? if a security guard were to look at me, they would easily be able to see that i have to mics clipped to my shirt. any suggestions will be muchly appreciated. thanks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
A440 Posted January 20, 2005 Report Share Posted January 20, 2005 Camouflage.Assuming you have little mics, I suggest:Wear a black/dark shirt with buttons and a collar. Put the mics down the front of your shirt and fold the last foot of mic cord (with the mics on the end) over the top button of your shirt and back under the placket, so the mic and cord are completely under the shirt. Once the lights go down, you can pull out the mics, clip them to your collar, pull the plug out and run it along your belt loops and keep the MD in your pocket. If you can do it unobtrusively, put it on REC/PAUSE and set it to RecVolume: Manual/ 10/30 under RecSet. If not, and you have to just turn it on unobtrusively, you're stuck with AGC. In my experience, security folks won't look twice at you. Few people know about MD, and I've sometimes taken my MD into shows with searches--I just tell them it's an MP3 player, and they have no idea otherwise. If you're sitting there in the dark with mics on your collar, it's highly unlikely they'll notice. No guarantees, of course. But security people tend to be looking for troublemakers, not recordists. Given the sound level in your recording location, the pre-amp will have to be turned all the way down. No way to hear any noises such as breathing, smoking ect ect.I have found the best mounting location (in stealth mode) to be on my shirt collars pointing forward. If you wear a dark coloured shirt you won't be noticed. Locate yourself mid point of the P.A stacks and away from loud chatty people. Don't record with the auto gain function on, instead use the manual record level, and check your levels to make sure your not distorting.If all goes well you will have an audio recording that will take you back to that exact moment everytime you play it. hanz0 Posted January 25, 2005 Author Report Share Posted January 25, 2005 my hi-md player doesnt have a light in the display, so im thinking it will be pretty hard to set the rec level in the dark. is there a pre-setting you would recommend that i do before hand.
