ATRAC bit rate hack theory...

Question

So with SS 3.2, there are now options to encode to Atrac3plus with a multitude of bitrates. But when you connect your various Atrac equipment to SS, you can only transfer some bitrates without conversion.

My theory is that there must be some config file that tells SS which bitrates are valid with the device that's attached. If we are able to find this file and edit it so that SS thinks all bitrates are transferrable to say a HD5, then that bitrate might be playable once it's on the device.

It's only a theory and I have no idea if it would work. It also assumes that the HD5 is actually capable of playing all bitrates that are thrown at it.

What do you think?

Okay, so who has the PC know-how to track down said config file, always supposing it exists? Show me how to alter it and I'll run some tests.

i would have thought, again with no reason for it, that what stops playback on the various dvices is themselves. on the vaio pocket you can transfer non-standard mp3s but they wont playback at all crashing the pocket. so even if you get the omas on they may not playback at all.

It could well be that this info is encapsulated in the SS app itself or in one of the dll's. The list of bitrates in the drop down box when ripping is obviously hard-coded into the exe so what's not to say the matching of devices and compatible bitrates isn't as well.
