Sb/sonic Stage V Optical In - Sound Quality?

Having used both Simple Burner and SS 2.3 to burn cds to my NH1 in Himd SP mode, I have a nagging doubt about the quality. I'm just not convinced that the results are quite as good as the old-style SP discs I copied via the optical input on my old Sharp MD.

Simple question: has anyone compared the results of copying a CD via the optical input of a HIMD player direct from a CD player against using SB/SS?

The optical-in IMO is better as the compression hardware on the Hi-MD seems to be better than the software on the SonicStage. But the difference is minute.

Anything encoded by hardware LSI is better than anything encoded by SS's codecs. In the case of HiSP, the difference is pretty minute as Michael1980 said, but in bitrates lower than this, the difference becomes steadily more obvious as the bitrate goes down.

I still find LP2 from SS to be completely unaccepable for general use [fine for in the car though, say]. Comparing LP2 from a hardware encode to LP2 from SS is like .. comparing seashells to garbage cans.

However, they haven't tested the built-in encoders of MD units. Too bad, because I heard those encoders perform better than the encoder that comes with SonicStage. Why don't they use that algorithm in SonicStage anyway? Is it because of speed? I don't mind to wait a little longer for encoding when the resulting ATRAC files will sound way better!

Is there any way to record LP2 onto normal MD, and then somehow transfer that file to a HiMD disc without re-encoding? I have an MD deck (with MDLP support) and a lot of stuff I'd like in LP2 on a HiMD disc for travelling, etc, and would like to not have to use SS to do the encoding due to the lower quality, but it seems like there's not really an option...

From my VERY limited testing, LP2 via SS does sound a bit more "compressed" than LP2 from the deck, which tends to be very, very good for its bitrate.

the difference should be on time but not on the quality

optical in u will need to do it real time(10 mins for 10 mins of music)

and I remember 2-3 years when NetMD first appears, many people are complaining about it's slow speed to extract tracks from cd(SonicStage)

I do think Sony staff do have changed the dll(should be?) for the extraction

and I personally do think, cracking from a software(dll) is much more easier than cracking from a chip

that may mean, SonicStage may not functioning 100% like as the chip in the md player/recorder do

but, well, yes, it is only my guess

and, yes, even for ATRAC(ur SP)

that's different version even only for Sony

and, yes

different brand do have different ATRAC version

that all may make a difference

(remember u say that old SP is made from Sharp machine?)
