HELLO!

CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT I SHOULD DO? I've recorded some music on a 1GB disc (using only hi-SP).

After the latest recording i tried to listen to what I recorded, but I couldn't play, nor do anything else. My recorder (mz-nh1) just gives me this message: "FORMAT ERROR DISC - FORMAT TO RECORD OR PLAY?" What should I do now? I've got many hours of important recordings on that disc plus at least 3 hours of unused space. If I push "yes" is all data then erased or what? On the other hand, the recorder asks: "format to record OR PLAY?" So if it promises to format to PLAY then it can't erase my recordings, right??

The problem is just that I don't understand how can I choose between "format to record or play"? The recorder gives me only the option to "take it or leave it" to the whole offer. I can only push enter for yes or cancel for no.

I can't have these recordings erased!

If anyone can help... I'd be thankful.

This is a suspected fault with all HiMd Players. Call Sony UK on 08705 111999 Case Number 140981444.

personal suggestion : try to eject the disc and insert again

try a few times

and, if Sony is just near to u

u can try hand in the disc to them

their engineer can help u in just a few minutes(excluding the time it takes to travel ur disc from that Sony customer Service to the Sony Repair "place')

not necessarily

HiMD discs are not like normal MDs, they do not have predictable TOC positions or lengths and thus reconstruction and data backup/retreival is much harder than it previously was

I know

I am just thinking it may be due to "problem to read for the system file" on the disc

service centres around here charge au$100/hour or part there of. so taking it there in most places would be silly.

more importantly henry have you tried any other 1gig discs? how about standard mds? or standard mds formatted to himd?

  • 3 weeks later...

not necessarily

You mean, because there is a FAT-like File System on the HiMDs instead of a simple list of Positions of an ATRAC-Stream (TOC) on the old MDs.

Well, TOC-Cloning isn't possible anymore, but if you i.e. turn off the power while writing a file to a HD or Floppy, the File seems not to be written but the data can be restored from the lost chains in the FAT. (except the last cluster which may not have been marked in the FAT)

But Harddisks and Floppys usually don't have that f***** DRM/Encryption thing.

The other broblem is, even if you could restore the sectors, and store the data in this big .HMA file the Header may mismach. and -thanks to DRM- you won't even know if something in the hidden area of a HiMD was not written correctly.

That would be the reason why the unit wants to (re)format the disc.

I think only the Sony guys who know the file format and have access to the keys for decryption can restore the data on a HiMD (for now...)
