Using A Live Mic With The Poc Mz-r500

Hey all, I wish i had read these boards long ago.

I just picked up a mz-r500 on ebay for my girlfriend who is a journalist to use to record interviews and the like. Of course i checked arefully and was completely misled about the mic input that apparently isn't really there. Before knowing that, I went to test it with a cheap unpowered mic i had lying around and got a bunch of nothing for the effort. A few searches later and i see several posts mentioning that there is none.

I saw that i could record from another MD player through a stereo 1/8th inch jack, so I couldn't figure out why the mic wouldn't work, and then saw this:

So can someone help me avoid spending more money trying to get a decent (not too large) microphone that will work? Any advice links to current info etc would be great.

Thanks!

Hi,

I own an MZ-R500 from a few years ago. At that time I think I remember that I was able to record my voice using a cheap mic that came with a minicassette recorder, but after a few years I tried to record voice by using a mic to connect directly to the MD player, but it didn't work... after searching for a long time, I found this forum and this thread. So will this mic work with the MZ-R500? Any one have experience with this mic or MD player?

My main goal for recording is to record lectures, and perhaps piano and guitar music.

You're out of luck, this recorder has no microphone preamplifier. You'll need either a different recorder with mic-in (preferably with sensitivity setting) or an external microphone preamplifier.

Yeah, considering this I am also looking to buy a new recorder.

Any recommendations for price/functionality?

Also, are there alternatives to MD recorders for portable quality recording?
