ranwill Posted March 22, 2005 Report Share Posted March 22, 2005 Ok, I'm 50 and confused. I want to buy a hi-md recorder/player but can't figure which is best for my needs. I want to be able to record occasional concerts (none that are super loud but maybe a stealth one sometimes). I want to be able to do some soundseeing tours, so I need a sensitive mic, and I need to be able to record my new granddaughter as she begins to talk. I'd want to upload the recording to my PC and edit them.I've been looking at the soon to be released Sony MZ-RH10 or the Sony MZ-RH910 but don't know if they wil do what I want. mrsoul Posted March 22, 2005 Report Share Posted March 22, 2005 Randy-Welcome. I would actually look at the 1st Generation models like the NH800 or NH900. The price should drop on those soon since the 2nd G's are just around the corner. Unless you really want mp3 capabilities, there's not a big reason to pay more for the 2nd G's. As for a mic, you can get the Giant Squid battery box and mic combos for around $80, which is very good and a decent combo that is easy to use. Those mics do a pretty good job. Or you can look at the standard mics from Sound Pros with their battery box. There binaurals sound pretty darn good for the price as well. Another alternative right now might be to use the mic input for recording your granddaughter and tourists sounds and then use the RS Attenuator cable route via the mic input for the loud steathly shows,etcDon't over look the guys at Reactive Sounds either. Their Auris mics have gotten some serious raves and you can use those with the mic input or battery box,etc.Really lots of good choices with mics that you can directly connect to your Hi-MD. I would forego the 2nd G's Hi-MD and focus on the NH900, NH-1 or NH800. I like the Nh900 because of the extra AA battery source and the line-out option. Welcome and good luck with your choice. Check out http://etronics.com for some good deals on the Hi-MDs. (Although they are currently out of stock on the NH900 and NH-1, I have bought several things from them without problem). A440 Posted March 23, 2005 Report Share Posted March 23, 2005 I pretty much agree with mrsoul, but you don't even need to get something as expensive as the NH-900. The NHF-800 I (if you are in the US) or the NH-700 (if you are outside the US) are the same unit except that the NHF-800 has a radio in the remote control, and it will serve your purposes nicely. I prefer it because it runs on a simple AA battery: not a little gumstick that has to be recharged or an outboard battery pack that can get lost. Line-out, which is not available on the 700 or 800, is nice but not essential since you can upload the recordings to your PC anyway. The bottom of the line Sound Professionals mics--BMC-2, often as low as $29 at the Sound Pros site or from Sound Pros itself on Ebay--are ideal for stealthy recording and sensitive enough for ambient/babytalk recording. I have used them for concerts and speech with excellent results. Get clips with them so you can use them anywhere. And if you use the RS attenuator to record concerts you won't need a battery box.Prices are going to drop shortly on the 1st-generation units, so wait a few weeks until Sony brings out the second generation and grab a bargain. Is it discontined ir just in short supply? That's why I asked if it was discontinued. It was suggested that I wait till next month or so when the new models come out, so that I can get a discounted price.
