Is it true that due to a major bug in all the players firmware - all 1st gen units are no longer for sale (you can only buy if they are currently existing stock)?

How can this be true after 6 months?

P.S. I hope this post is not erased as was the one I entered yesterday! Who runs this site, Sony?

Well, if you look on the tourist page, the recorders are still there:

http://www.ecat.sony.co.jp/tourist/mdwalkman/index.cfm?B2=74

However, on the normal catalog page, the NH600,700 & 900 are gone.

http://www.ecat.sony.co.jp/audio/walkman/cate01.cfm?B3=292

Only the NH1 and the NH3D survived. And lastly it makes sense, as the new recorders are more attractive an possibly cheaper to manufacture.

Plus, you asked: After only 6 months?

For an electronic product, 6 months is quite a time, many computer products have a much lower shelf live.

Btw, recalls are done for serious safety reasons, not for an edit function, that messes up under certain complicated conditions.

I do believe, as Woodgnome does, that there is a connection between the new generation, and possible 1st generation "hidden" bugs.

I also do believe that as soon as this news becomes official, we are going to see the first firmware udate for 1st generation HIMD!!!!

cheers

WOOGNOME's THREADS SHOULD BE STICKY NOW!!!!

@jadeclaw

i don't know about sony's politic about recalls but i think in this case there isn't any complicated edit action. these are just the old-generation cut-move-merge functions which are quite used by anyone who is making on-the-road editing i would say.

Jadeclaw,

It is not like the HIMD is going to blow your head up laugh.gif !!!!

SIMPLE EDITING is the base for a RECORDING DEVICE.

if you can't remove crap from your recordings, and simply merge two tracks without screwing the whole disk, that is BEYOND my concept of COMPLICATED!!!

by the way, what are you trying to prove?

I have bought a recording device: Should I forget about recording and editing on the field just because it doesn't work? And thanks Sony for its SAFETY?!?!?!? sad.gif

Cheers

I think what jadeclaw means is that Sony wouldn't spent thousands of pounds/dollars/euros recalling all 1st generation Hi-MD players because of a bug in the editing function.

Companies only recall products when there is a serious health & safety risk, in this case I think Sony would just announce a firmware upgrade where you take your MD player to a Sony shop etc. and they sort the problems out there by upgrading the firmware of the player.

No, not always. There were some automobiles recalled recently... might have been Ford minivans... ? I'm not sure. But anyway the reason for the recall was some silly little issue with the automatic sliding door because there were some imbeciles straining their backs trying to open the door rather than hitting the big "Open" button.

Sony doesn't run this site, and I don't think they could handle running it, either. wink.gif

There is no bug, there is no recall, hence why the other thread was deleted to avoid speculation. This sort of speculation casts doubt in people's minds, and may correlate to lesser sales for any generation of Hi-MD, hence why we are very careful about what is said here, espesically now that search engine spiders collect everything we say hourly. Furthermore, with more than 50-100 users on at any time, we are a very heavy influence for the MD community.

This thread isn't going anywhere, and is locked. I figured you would've gotten the hint when the first one was deleted, so I'll say it here: Do not post another thread like this again unless it's for real.
