Sonic Stage 3.0 Does Not Recognize Hi-md

I've had about 6 calls to Sony about this, Chatted online with them and gone back and forth and gotten nowhere, So I'm hoping you guys (The real pros) can help me out.

Sony MZ-NHF800 HI-MD

Windows XP Home SP2

I can install Sonicstage 2.1 (original from the CD) and upgrade using the link off Esupport.sony.com to 2.3 and everything is fine. But whenever I upgrade to anything higher 3.0/3.1, it stops recognizing my Hi-MD unit. When I click on the Transfer button at the top it shows ATRAC/MP3 CD and no Hi-MD when the unit is connected.

Sony has said that I need to reinstall and go directly to 3.1 (canadian Version) without upgrading to 2.3 first, I've tried everything and nothing works. Chat support has now dished me off to Phone support who closes at 5:00. Has anyone else run into this problem?

I get no errors, everything else works great. I would be happy with 2.3, but there are features in 3 that I want to take advantage of. I hope someone else has experienced this previously and has an answer because It's really frustrating. I've had this unit for a week and not been able to use it at all, save for the one time that I transfered a few files using 2.1

Thanks for your help.

Jeff.

Same problem as you Jeff, thought mine was jsut due to the fact that I am trying to install off-line and that gets rather complicated. So I am back to 2.1 on my 800 just like you are. Very frustrating sad.gif

Yea, It's frustrating all right. I've been hung up on. I'm in Canada so the american (online) tech support people and the phone (canadian) tech support people keep passing the buck to the other one.

I'll definitely keep you posted if I find anything. Otherwise, I'm hoping someone around here can help us out!

Try to dis/connect the player when SS is running and removing and reinserting the disc.

I'm going to try that next. It would be crazy if it actually worked, I've reinstalled and uninstalled at least 7 or 8 times by now. I even talked to Sony again since last post and (Canadian) tech support didn't even know that 3.1 existed. They even denied that it existed until I led them to the link. They then admitted ignorance and said eventually they will probably be briefed on the software but as for why it doesn't work they have no idea.

Have you done a complete uninstall of 2.x following the FAQ?

Thanks, I tried that, still doesn't solve my problems. It DID lose my library of music, but that's about all. I wish Sony could just get it right for once when it comes to software- a simple, offline installer with no complications and obscure dependencies would be great. But then this is sony sad.gif

UPDATE:

I've tried installing again using the MDCF SS3.1 installer- nice job, by the way- and I still have the same issue- MD simpleburner recognizes my NHF800, but SS does not. I've done a comprehensive uninstall of the old software before installing the new one (several times) and every tiem the same result.Every time, SS2.0/2.3 works fine, but then there are issues with those trashing uploads. This is really starting to piss me off- I saved for months to buy this thing, waited for a year before I could get hold of one, now I basically can't use it for uplaoding recordings, which is why I got it to start with. Any suggestions, other than re-installing windows?

My specs:

P4 3.0 HT

512Mb RAM

100Gb HDD

Windows XP Home w/SP2

Dx9.0c

Latest MDAC

MZ-NHF800

I have the same issue. I just got the MZ-RH10 and trying to run SS3.1 and I have the same problem. SS does not recognize my md player. I've uninstalled deleted registry keys the whole thing now what?! I'll keep looking around.

This is what happens if your installed version of SS does not match with the setting for non-unicode program in windows, and this is your first time connecting the device after the upgrade. For example, I have US SS, and changed windows non-unicode setting to Japanese. If I did this before SS install the drivers needed for the device, it won't recognize the device. I have to switch windows back to US/English, connect all the units one-by-one (network walkmans, NetMD, etc) for SS to recognize them and install the drivers. Once this is done (SS has the necessary drivers), I can switch windows back to Japanese, and everything is fine. This has to be done with every upgrades, since the upgrades will uninstall the previoius version of SS.

In short, if this is the first time you plug-in the device for that specific version of SS, the version of Ss has to match your windows non-unicode program setting.

How dumb can Sony be... wink.gif

OK I dumped ss 3.1 and started over with the cd that came with my player. Now it is working fine just transferred some tracks. Does take awhile to convert then transfer. I can't wait to hear them play.

PS. I wonder if i had the wrong ss 3.1. I can still change it can't I? Do I have to dump ss 3.0 and reinstall?

The computer experts here might disagree. But I'd suggest that if you have 3.0 working then you don't bother to upgrade to 3.1.

You already have the uploading and automatic convert-to-.wav capability; 3.1 doesn't add significant new features. And with SonicStage, every upgrade means (first) backing up your whole library with the backup tool and then wondering whether the upgrade will leave you much worse off than before.

It it ain't broke, don't upgrade it.
