Toc Cloning On Mz-r37--possible?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Well, I just did what's apparently a common error on my MS-R37 portable--ejecting a first MD in a rush while recording and not letting the TOC write properly--resulting in a "blank" disc.

So, I was wondering if TOC cloning is possible on R37.

If anyone could clue me in that would be most helpful.

Also, are there any US-based MD recovery services?

Thanks. . .

No TOC cloning possible on the R37.

As far as I know, there is no recovery service for MD.

To stop further questions, a few words about the usual costs in data recovery services.

An estimate usually is about 500 to 1000 US$,

a full recovery can cost up to 10 000 US$.

Buying a used home deck on ebay, which can do the toc cloning trick is the better way here.

Check this page about the procedure and suitable rigs:

http://www.minidisc.org/cloning_procedure.html

Btw, how did you got out the disc before the update was finished?

The Release button is locked until the recorder has finished writing.

OK that confims what I had discovered online already. Although there does seem to be some guy who'll extract MD data on a volunteer basis, but have no idea what his deal is.

But to answer your question:

I have no idea. I was in a hurry and hit the release switch several times in a row. I didn't think the TOC could screw up on the r37 the way it did. Oh well. I'd better find some hackable deck and get to work. . .

Thanks. . .

Yep, there is someone in the UK, using modified MD-Data drives to extract the Atrac-Data directly from the disc.

You find it here: http://www.esdl.co.uk/

On the other paw, having a decent home deck, especially when working extensively with MD, is always a plus...

Hi,

I see that the R37 can't do the cloning trick, but what about the N707 or the R900 (both of which I have). I see from the N707 hack and the Reset Sony MZ-Rzzz Series hacks that it is possible to get into a service mode. So I wonder if the TOC can be faked in using that mode. That is, can the TOC Clone be done on an N707 or R900. Thanks.

Oh, and first thing in the morning I want to try out the Reset hack to see if it will readjust my R/W laser heads to make my R900 work better at reading and also to get it to start recording properly again. The Reset hack looks like it realigns these heads.

Thanks.

Hi,

I've just complete a hack on my Sony R900 to Reset the NV in the unit and also to perform some alignment tests, all done in Service mode. My problem now is that I cannot get out of Service mode. I've tried removing all power, battery, and adapter, but when I put the battery back in, I come up in Service mode again. Can't get back to where I can play Minidiscs. Anyone have an idea how to get out of Service mode from a Sony R900 (besides complete removal of power, which isn't working)?

Toc cloning IS possible on the R37. Actually it's possible on al sony portable MD units.

You wil however have open up the unit and bypass the lid and disk detection switch in order to fool the unit in "thinking"you didn't swap the disk.

The unit is stuck in service mode because youve reset the NV. Now there's no more information on the optical unit adjustements.

You can try the following, there's a great possibillity the unit works again.

You'l need a MD CD disk (pre-recored) and a MD MO disk. Use an empty one, existing recordings wil be destroyed.

Plug in power, service mode comes up. Insert MDCD disk, pres << (rew). The unit switches to auto adjustment. Press Play. CD adjustement starts. When ready it wil display CD OK. Now eject CD disk and insert MO disk and press STOP, << and PLAY. MO auto adjustement wil start. When ready it wil display MO OK.

Now remove power and connect it again. Most likely the unit wil work normally now.

Succes and sorry for any grammar errors.

Has anyone been able to bypass it?

How does the disk detection work?

okay half way down the right side of the mz-r900 there is a small button that is pressed when the minidisc door closes, when it is released is signifies a disc change.

I had to completly take off the lid and the disc loading mechanism to get at it. I then taped it down.

I had one blank disc with a long track recorded. and two disc i wanted to recover.

I swiched the discs. One gave me a disc error when i tried to play it.

The other I am able to play. I am recording it to my HD right now, as I have not managed to get it to write the time code yet. But It will use the time code of the other disc.

Wether I will ever vbe able to reassemble the disc man perfectly is questionable.

Really I believe TOC recovery should be a built in function in the future. Its all kind of ridiculous this tinkering aboiut.

It does not work for my R37, because when I open the lid, the machine automaticaly swicht off and lose the TOC information of the source disc (the one with a long track recorded). In spite of that little disk detection swicht bypassed

I´m trying to recover a very important recording for me, if anybody know how to do it with this MD, or if it is possible...

There are probably two switches that need to be bypassed to do this.

The one as you mentioned cuts the power when the eject button is engaged, the other would tell the unit that the lid is open.

I was able to modify my MZ-R700 to bypass these switches, however the switch that cuts the power when eject is pressed had to be physically broken off. The switch that tells the unit it is open was able to be taped down.

Look in the downloads section here in the forums to see if the service manual for the R37 is there and see if you can figure it out.

PM me if you want any help, where are you located anyway?

It might just be easier for you to find someone who has a deck that can do TOC cloning and send them the disc to get it fixed. Maybe you could even find someone here at the forums, but there is hope. I'd be interested to know if you or anyone else ever gets TOC cloning to work on the R37. Good luck!
