sebastianbf Posted June 8, 2005 Report Share Posted June 8, 2005 hii want to buy a pair of earphones to use with my mznh900. i'm looking for phones that cost less than $40 dollars. i want you to help me decide which one of this models is the best one for use with my mznh900:MDR-EX71SL or MDR-ED31SPi don't know so much about headphones, so coud anyone explain me what is more important : a bigger frequency response or a bigger sensitivity. i don't know exactly what they mean. so please explain me. Tiesto Posted June 10, 2005 Report Share Posted June 10, 2005 (edited) First of all, I am not an audio expert but I will try to explain what I understand about the topic ( if anyone sees wrong information, please correct me).-Nowadays the most commonly available headphones/earphones for portable devices have an impedance of 16ohms due to mostly power consumption reasons, the higher the impedance the lower the battery life. So with 16ohms you can get higher volumen without worry about battery life.-The frequency response is the sound frequency range that the speaker/headphones can produce, we have to take in mind that the human ear can hear sounds roughly between 20Hz - 20kHz, however a common person reaches the 16kHz at most. So theoretically if a set of headphones has a frequency response between 6Hz - 23kHz then it will produce a clearer sound than other with a smaller range, but can you tell the difference when you're walking in the street, in a bus or even in a quite place? (remember the placebo effect ).-The sensitivity is the standard way to rate audio devices, the most of the earphones are between the 100db - 108db/mW, read here for more info http://www.rane.com/note100.html.The perfect headphones is a subjective matter, what it is good for one may not be suitable for another, factors like music type, ear size, work/home area are important. I cant tell any comment about your options coz I didnt try them, Im expecting the ex71 though. The only thing sure is the Sony ex71 earbuds have good reviews all over web, most of the ipod users, md users, mp3 players users say they are THE earbuds: comfortable and excellent sound, so the probability that they are a good set of earphones is high . atrain Posted June 10, 2005 Report Share Posted June 10, 2005 931 i assume. lot like 'free' buds you get with sony stuff, maybe a bit better. of the two i'd go ex71 with the short cord. get the white too as the wires seem thicker, less prone to acidental damage. I've owned two pairs of EX71s (old and new version) and loved them, but got sick of shelling out for pair after pair when exactly the same problem happened with both of them - the left channel flat out died. I took good care of them, exercised caution with the wires and put them in a watertight pelican box after use...didn't matter.I then switched to the MDR-ED31s, and have been happy with them ever since (using them as we speak ). Bass-wise they have nothing on the EX71s, but the cords are actually cloth-wrapped or something, which is much, much more durable than the EX-71s will ever be. Damage Posted August 24, 2005 Report Share Posted August 24, 2005 Frankly, neither.For $40, you could've gotten:Panasonic RP-HJE50sKoss PortaPros (with some judicious shopping)Koss ProtaPro2Koss Clip-ons, (look for 60ohms), such as KSC75 and KSC35s.Sennheiser MX400/450/500/550, whatever's availableSenn PX100s (with very judicious shopping)I've had 3 pairs of EX71s (2 I've given to others, one white), and none of them exhibits the dead left channel. doomlordis Posted September 1, 2005 Report Share Posted September 1, 2005 I wouldnt buy either, i have the 31 and they sound muddy, the ex71s are bad earphones , awful actually.If i were you i would look at the panasonic hje50, jvc fx55 or teh ed21lp as they all sound better than the other 2.
