Charging Battery On Rh10

I have a 910, which is practically the same unit. If you're charging it up for the first time, you should connect the AC power charger to the unit, the press the stop (cancel/chg) button, and the battery indicator will blink and 'fill' up.

Or you can just plug it into a USB port on your computer with the USB cable. It should automatically start charging, again with the battery indicator filling.

The battery that came with the unit shouldn't take too long to charge... it doesn't appear to have a great capacity.

i think that the battery will have a longer life if you charge it when it's completely empty. something about a memory issue. search the forums or search in google for battery use or something like that.

If the battery is Ni-MH, then it shouldn't suffer from the 'memory' effect that is common with Ni-Cd rechargeables.

I have never used the supplied Ni-MH battery with my Nh700 (700mAh?! Hah!) and use a set of 1300mAh Ni-MH instead. They last two minutes in a digital camera but about two weeks in my Walkman, and go on for quite a long time after the indicator starts blinking.

the Battery University is a useful source for info on batteries...

as Dex says, Ni-MH does suffer from the memory effect, but having a couple of full charge/decharge cycles at the beginning and once every couple of months will repair it...

charging through USB isn't advisable: it will only charge really slow, and never fully so this will amplify the memory effect

enjoy your Hi-MD!... greetings,

Volta

The RH10 states in the manual that it can only charge to 60% when using the USB cable and this may take...... well forever springs to mind.

To fully charge the battery you need to plug it into the mains adaptor and press the stop button to stop the unit and then I found if you hold the stop button down you eventually see it say "Charging" and you can leave it like that until its charged.

I had figured the NiMH would have some small amount of memory. It would be nice if the units could do a 'recondition' cycle. I guess it should be done manually. (like, put in an MD on Shuffle, with Repeat on, throw some unpowered speakers on it at moderate volume, and let it play at home while you go out and run errands) I have been charging mine through USB since I connect it to my laptop every night anyway. I think I'll try my 'recondition' procedure and use the AC adapter to charge it up.

I also have a couple more batteries on the way. I'll charge them up via AC charger for the first couple times.

with my NH900 I either let it run on shuffle withe the backlight continuously on, driving my bigger Sennheisers, or put it on shuffle and line out through the stereo... that way I even enjoy those recondition cycles tongue.gif

always charging through USB really doesn't seem like such a good idea...then I would really suggest a couple of full re-/full decharge cycles each month or so

I have heard horror stories about charging the batteries with the unit (stuck batteries, oozing chemicals inside units and the like). I don't know if they are true but I don't want to risk it.

I personally use a seperate charger (charges two gumsticks at a time) for the batteries on my R900 and Sharp MD-MT170.
