Slinky Nandita
Can anyone suggest a way to avoid recording the noise from MD when using a plug in power microphone? Basically you pick up the sound from the players mechanisms and it's very noticable.
atrain
your optical block sounds like it's screwed. repair costs are not much below a new 2nd gen himd unit. please move this thread to software support
KrazyIvan
Welcome to the board.Translation for atrain:It sounds like your N505 is broken. It will cost you almost the same to repair it as getting a brand spankin' new generation unit. You are better off getting a new one or finding a suitable replacement on ebay for much less. Whoa!, your question was edited:As for the mic, I would use an extension cable to put some distance between the unit ant the mic. Keith
Not sure that this is the problem. Does your mic have a cable or plug directly into the unit? If it plugs in direct, you may pick up the sound from inside the unit.
Slinky Nandita
It plugs in directly. It's a Sony ECM-DS70P, the same one with two ends(left and right) The plug is onlg 1.5cm long so your proberbly right.
KJ_Palmer
Yes, so the extension cable's a good idea, something like this. Also if you place the recorder in a soft case or pouch and possibly in a bag or jacket pocket, that should also give you some extra protection from the whirring grinding of the MD's motor... saaron
Slinky, I've got the same mic; I was already aware this could be an issue. I just record sounds of my daughter playing and making noise and the occasional sound of the head moving isn't that big a bother or I'd use an extension cable to put more distance between the mic and the unit. Outside of that I find it an excellent and extremely sensitive microphone, quite capable of picking up sound in another room(!). I can't say I'd record live music with it, but certainly for ambient sounds, interviews and lectures I cannot fault it.
