Ascariss
After reading many replies to why some people are not going to get the new A series from sony. It has come to my attention that one possible factor is capacity. So I ask, how much do you really need? and will you fill it up on the first day? I personally might be able to get up to 10 gigs once I get mine, but will I fill it up? I doubt it. Unless I use it for data storage as well. Redian
I have just received my A3000 yesterday and started to fill it with my CD collection. Even with my entire collection I will still have significant space left. 20 GB is ample.
Syb
At the beginning, 10 gigas seem to be a huge. But, if you need to encode your music at a good bitrate in order to really enjoy it using high quality earbuds like Shure's i.e (that can not be used with aproximative sound playback), the HDD is quick fully.my vote is at less 20-30. Syb
Except Mp3FileManager, (and now GYM ) I only store music tracks. I had a lot of CDs before taking a HDD MP3 Unit (first one was an Archos Gmini220) and all are encoded now. Sometimes, I encode at lower bitrate, for old records that don't need to be in high quality (not remasterized old lp's or foreign language training course CDs) but, generally, I'm not under 256kbps. Since I have Shure's Earbuds, I had to re-encode some CD's in higher quality because sound was too bad and it was really disturbing for ears. And my HD5 is near to be full now... (less than 3gigs before reaching the limits).I like having all my CD's collection in my pocket and pick in it according to my mood... pata2001
Depends on what you use the DAP for. For music only, 20GB is probably more than enough for most people. Some may need ~30GB, but only a small number of people have music collection more than that. I still haven't filled up my 20GB DellDJ 2nd gen, although I know if I really put ALL my music collection, I probably need more than that. Once you add pictures and videos though, you'll want the largest possible size (40GB+), since videos are quite large.
djduquet
I have a lot of music. My NW-HD1 died, which was too bad, but it's not the end of the world. I don't know what to do because it didn't have enough space to carry my entire music collection with me. When I first started with the idea of HDD units it was to carry everything with you with no extra discs. What a great idea. But for those of us who have a lot of music by buying albums over many years it becomes very important to have high capacity. Thus my vote for 30-40. More would be better, but cost to capacity this would be the best. This will soon be a very serious problem for Sony unless it is resolved. High capacity is important. Rumz
It can't hurt to have more than 20 gigs. Until recently the only problem was that there was no 40 gig walkman option for people who needed more than 20 (I know the Vaio exists but it's not a walkman technically and it's not that tiny). Another problem is that now the main competition is offering 30gigs as a minimum on their full sized hard drive players. I've used 20 or more on my Vaio-- half of that is just film scores and I don't even have them all on there. Maybe it's that I'm lazy and the point of having an HDD player with 20+ gigs is to not have to swap music on and off-- it's convenience. Plus, if you have extra space it becomes handy for other file transfers, etc. Bottom line is that I will continue to acquire new music and will continue to want to take it on the go-- more space is better and if the technology is out there. I think the NW-A1000 fits great for those people who don't need a lot of space. I just think of the 3000 is going to be the one for people who need lots of space... why keep it at 20 per se? Bottom line is that for $400 bones you can now get a 60 gig iPod that's pretty dang slim. It just needs an EQ and gapless to secure me, because otherwise the new black one is pretty slick. KJ_Palmer
It might sound greedy, but I really need/want more than 40GB. I have 500+ CDs albums (and counting), and I won't use less than 256kbps, and prefer 352k. At that rate you get about 6 albums per 1GB, so I'm really talking about needing 80+GB. I could just about do that on 2 Vaio pockets, but surely we'll see 100+GB DAPs in future, so I think I'll just hang around a while... andysnap
So I ask, how much do you really need? and will you fill it up on the first day?←Maybe because I'm old enough to have come from the days of making compilations on cassette tape, then onto using MiniDisc (before Hi-MD), I use both my HD3 and MD's to store just a selection of music, often recent CD buys, for easy, portable listening. So 20gb on my HD3 is more than enough! I don't really want to carry around a vast selection, or my entire CD collection (who has the time to encode 'em all?!).Its amazing though that technology allows us to carry anything from a couple of Gb's to hundreds in devices that are as small as each other, so we have players of varying capacity to keep us all happy!Andrew
Richard_p
I voted 30-40gbi like to know that once one of my CD albums has been ripped it is can ber kept on the player for good, rather than having to constantly swap file between the computer and DAP, especially since i as=lso like to use my Vaio for external file storage. I think i might just about be able to get by witha 20 gb player as my VP currently has jus 12.4gb used, i'm just wary as yuo actually always get less than is advertised, meaning that jsut 12.4gb may actually be closing in ona '20gb' pleyrs capacity.
