Two days ago I remebered what I hated about my MZ N707 belt Minidisc holder.

I was walking from one boat to another when my holder fell off my belt and into the ocean. Got the NH1 out of the water quick, but the damage had been done. Does anyone know of an international MD site that would attempt a repair? I'm trying to get hold of Minidisc Canada who I got the unit from and see what their options are.

Oh sad day.

There are some things you can do in the same situation next time, it may allow the unit to have a 2nd life.

If you dunk it in the sea, you MUST fish it out VERY quickly, remove the battery and dunk the whole lot into normal tap water (battery as well but not inside the machine. Then put the unit into very clean (pref distilled) water and rinse it out, clean the battery off using a cloth. Then let it dry out completely somewhere warm. The main idea is to remove the corrosive salts that are in the water and stop them from eating away at the electronics.

This has saved one or two items of equipment I had forgotten I put in my pocket when down the beach. It does not work on all equipment & dont assume it will save it but it is worth a try.

In your case though I think the damage has been done already.

Thanks to all,

Yes it was running, was listening to a disc, tried the water route, no luck, nothing happens when I try to use it. $400.oo paperwieigh by the looks of it. Many tears, got a reply from Min disc Canada, suggestion USA or Puerto Rico. Us won't send cables or electronic units out os the country due to perceives security risks a**es.

Will mail you Ishiyoshi, and see if any of your hints pan out.

Thanks lots,

Bob

Hi,

something like this happened to me a year ago with my MZ-N1. I was recording sounds from nature, forest, and there was a stream. When I walked over, the carrying case fell off my belt directly into the water. The unit was also running. It was within a second I grasped the device and pulled out the battery. At home I opened the unit and dried it up intensively. After several attempts when it still worked badly the ressurection was succesful and the unit is OK till now. The carrying pouch was Sony original, I use it no more and rather make one myself, a little bit robust.

In my case the water wasn't salted but I think if it doesn't change/damage the components or circuits inside, it is theoretically possible after perfect cleaning make the device running again. I have no experience about and I don't advice you to throughout splash the device with a lot of non-salted water to remove short-circuits. :-) If anything other will be useless.... have a luck!

I agree with Qwakrz,

we had a beer-accident in our forum and it was solved with distilled water - good luck  wink.gif

btw: is this a DS ("diva") in your avatar, bobt ?

if your md unit falls in the water, get it immediately out and REMOVE the battery at once. if it is salt ater (sea or polluted water) you should rinse it with destilled water, use liters of it and then let it dry for often more than a week in a dry warm place. normally it shoudl work again, but don't forget the most vital step REMOVE the battery at once!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: whoops, seems that someone has already written this. sorry for the duplicate info

Sorry to hear of your recent loss. We shall hold a funeral procession later this evening and a proper burial..

(just trying to get a smile out of you in light of the situation wink.gif)

Are you going to replace it with a newer unit? Perhaps you fancy a RH10?

Perhaps you should get an Otter Box next time around.

I'm weighing my oprions right now, waithing for an answer back from Sony Puerto Rico, hoping maybe for a goodwill warranty, or a swap for minmal dollars.

So far I'm not too impressed with second generation, but see what happens, need my music, and the 707 erases discs at random, so I'm a little shy about using too much.
