iano
Rather swimming against the tide (in the US at least) I have recently become an avid user of Minidisc technology - and I have both a Sony RH10 (HiMD) and a Sharp DS-80 (NetMD). I went for the SHarp as well since I read so many people's reports about how good the digital amp was in their players.I have sonicstage 3.1 on my PC - all questions here relate to using SS3.1 to transfer files from my PC , or my PC's CD player, to NetMD-formatted discs (needed for the Sharp)I really have tried to look for the answers to this question in this and other boards, and it may be there, but I am just not getting it I guess. However I transfer the songs (lets take for example Alicia Keys song Fallin') it always ends up in LP2 format, at a size of 3.9mb. This happens whether I opt to import it from the CD directly to the library first (opting for WAV format), or whether I first encode it in LAME mp3 format at 320CBR, or even convert the mp3 to WAV and then try to transfer it. So, despite the original files being of widely different sizes, it always ends up the same on the minidisc, even though I opt in Sonicstage to transfer 'as is' and for the program to ask me if it cannot transfer it that way.Can someone briefly explain why? What is the best way to maximize the quality of what ends up on the minidisc in NetMD format? I have just downloaded the M3U2Sb program which uses the combination of simpleburner and DaemonTools/Nero - can that get better quality files on the NetMD disc? How do I get original SP qulity on there (i.e. the 292bps rate)?BTW - the quality, even at LP2, seems very good to my old ears, so its just that I am particularly dissatisifed, just curious.Thanks. Breepee2
Record via the unit's line-in (optical perhaps) in realtime.
The Low Volta
However I transfer the songs (lets take for example Alicia Keys song Fallin') it always ends up in LP2 format, at a size of 3.9mb. ...even though I opt in Sonicstage to transfer 'as is' and for the program to ask me if it cannot transfer it that way.To see your exact settings could always check tools/options/transfer/Hi-MD or Net-MD (whichever you use for making the discs)/transfer settings/check the boxes you prefer and also look at the advanced settings...This said, an MD-fomatted disc (one that will play on the sharp) can only play LP4 (bad quality), LP2 and SP... it will not take wav, MP3, Hi-SP,... so it will always convert these other formats and I believe LP2 is the standard. With SS or SB I would recommend to use LP2 only for MD-formatted discs, as they do offer SP, but it is fake (the size of SP but not the sound quality) but I guess you know this as you ask...How do I get original SP qulity on there (i.e. the 292bps rate)?one answer: with patience! Real SP only comes at realtime ransfer speeds or better recording speeds... Just connect your Sharp (NOT the RH10, as it can't record in anything else but PCM/Hi-SP/Hi-LP) to a CD player by analogue cable (line out on CD-player -> line in on Sharp) or optical cable (optical out on CD->optical in on Sharp) press play on the CD and rec on the Sharp and wait till it's done... (although it might have a syncro-rec mode which is much easier and puts in trackmarks, just read the Sharp's manual)hope this helps, Volta

The Low Volta
I really like to help ppl, but I sometimes get a little bit ifrustrated when ppl don't read posts properly...BTW - I did find that if I import my music into Sonicstage in wav format, then I can record onto a MD (in NETMD mode) with SP mode. I can now compare the quality of Hi-SP and SP...Ianno real SP through any softwareHi-SP is very good and definitely better than fake SP but it is only useful for Hi-MD and this is the NetMD section of the forums... and Net-MD can't use Hi-SP, so any discussion about that would be in the wrong placegreetings, Volta
