Error While Uploading, Hi-md Unreadable

Hi,

I am new to this forum.

Well, I bought recently a Sony RH-10. I owned a MZ-N710 before, I was really happy with lots of improvements which have been made on the last Hi-MD generation.

The first time I used it was for live recording of my band. I put the good configuration, tested the recording, everything was perfect. After playing, I got a nice record...

When I went back home, I have made editing directly on the recorder, setting divisions, song titles, etc...I stopped it to make it register the changes and edit the sytem file.

Then I plugged the RH-10 to my laptop, to import files and create CD for me and my band. I opened SS3.0 (delivered with my Hi-MD), selected all the files on the Hi-MD (that was my mistake)...And I run the import...Everything went fine for the 5 first tracks...And then, the famous "omgjbox.exe" error, with report sending to Microsoft...

Problem is, I was uploading while the error occurred...And apparently, SS3.0 writes on the Hi-MD while transferring. Here it was blocked. I turned off SS3.0, restart my computer...Try to get back to SS3.0. But couldn't import anymore my other tracks !!!!

When I unplugged my RH-10, it tells me on the OLED screen to format my Hi-MD, which was bad format (because of the crash, data were not saved...). After #&%$* against Sony, I decided to plug again the RH-10 to my laptop and to open SS3.0.

I was very surprised to see my files on the right side on the screen, in the Hi-MD explorer !!! SS3.0 list them correctly, with the titles, the length, the properties when I right-clicked one, ...But when I try to import non-imported files, an error occurs (message : "an internal error occured"). I checked in the properties, they are not listed as "still imported", I should be able to upload them...When I want to play a track through SS3.0, same thing, nothing happens...But files are here !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wrote to Sony France for technical help. I should have guessed their answer..."Well, sorry for this error....blablabla...Sony's engineers don't know any way to recover data on Hi-MD...blablabla....Here are some possible reasons for SS3.0 disfunctionment, etc, etc..." Of course I don't believe them, they have solutions, but they can't give people softwares that could break their security technologies...

I've read the posts about "omgjbox" here...I saw this error could occur because of lots of conditions...For info, I have Win XP + SP2 (I didn't install the patch mentionned in lots of post yet), SS3.0, DirectX9, S3 Graphics Twister K as video card,...

But my main problem is : is there a way to get back my data from my Hi-MD ? Tracks are still on it !! I don't know, something like a scandisc to fix possible errors, or specific Hi-MD softwares...

This record is really important to me, I have to get it back !!!

So I'm looking for any software which could give me a chance to do that....

Or is it possible to develop a software which could be SS-like, without bugs wink.gif !! Are there such projects somewhere ? I could give a hand.

Thanks for any information you can provide to me.

Well thank you for your answer Syrius.

But that's the point !! I can't read my files through SS !!! Even if they are listed correctly, with names, length, good properties (I made another check this morning, all datas seem to be OK). When I ask for disc properties, I have the good size of used space and free space...But when I click on "Play", nothing happens (I tried with others discs, it's ok). And when I try to import non imported files, the progression bar loads very quickly, becomes green, and then I got the message "an internal error occurred"...Because of the error on the disk...

That's why I'ms sure there is a possibility to recover these files...Something like a scandisk for Hi-MD to fix the problem...Sony doesn't want to give me more info because they don't have it...I will write them again to tell them I dont' believe them, they are just trying to protect their security choices, which is understandable...But which not satisfied me as client and user !!!

I will search until I find a solution (there's one)...

For Total Recorder...After this first bad experience with SS3, I choose to make a "safe copy" of my records before uploading, as you say. But I use Audacity, which is free and good for me for the moment. I don't know if TotalRecorder has more functionnalities...

Well, 'keep looking, I'll tell you when I'll find the solution !

hi gwel, I sure hope you find a solution, but I very much doubt it... I think only Sony knows how to do the stuff you need and as you say, they probably won't give that knowledge away...so in stead of trying to anger them with any accusations (yet spiteful.gif ), it could perhaps be an option to offer to send the disc to them so they can try and recover the data without anyone external ever getting any inside knowledge... but that is still a very long shot as they clearly don't want anyone to think it is possible at all... or perhaps it just isn't possible, sounds unlikely, but who knows...it's Sony laugh.gif

But I use Audacity, which is free and good for me for the moment. I don't know if TotalRecorder has more functionnalities...

as far as I understood the explanations on the websites of both these products, I believe that TR will allow you to record the unmodified digital signal before it reaches your soundcard, while A can only record what has been processed by your soundcard...so that would make TR a $12 way to obtain a realtime bit-by-bit digital copy, while A gives a free but not bit-by-bit copy...

greetings, Volta

Well I think you're right, but I will have a try...One will see...

so in stead of trying to anger them with any accusations (yet spiteful.gif  ), it could perhaps be an option to offer to send the disc to them so they can try and recover the data without anyone external ever getting any inside knowledge... but that is still a very long shot as they clearly don't want anyone to think it is possible at all... or perhaps it just isn't possible, sounds unlikely, but who knows...it's Sony laugh.gif

Sure, it could be a solution. I thought about it. But I'm a bit afraid of what they can do with it, like "OK now we've got this disc, we format it, we wait for months telling this guy we are working on it, and we send it him back, telling we were not able to do anything...."

Don't know, I will ask this question with Sony technical support, and see if I feel them OK to do that...But that sounds like a dream, I can't imagine them making such support with a lonely user...

Well if I can't find any solution, maybe I will choose this option.

I understand the security tools Sony wants to preserve...But it causes many flexibility problems for end-users.

People now agree with the idea of using another software to save their data before using SS, because it often crashes...Where are we ??? We pay for a device, including software (because there are no alternative software to get files, thanks to Sony's own format...)...It's really strange to me...

And maybe that makes Hi-MD less popular in Europe than I-Pod or others walkman (even if Hi-MD have a special functionnality compare to them, the recording !)...That's a long debate...I close the parenthesis.

...so that would make TR a $12 way to obtain a realtime bit-by-bit digital copy, while A gives a free but not bit-by-bit copy...

Thanks a lot for your explanations. TR sounds to be great (lossless, and quite low-cost for such performances), I will have a look...
