OneManBand
Hi Guys,i've been reading all your discussions with interest.Just purchased a NH1.Have tried the following:Sennheiser 500: very quiet...the quietest I ever heared (119db too ? !) ............Lack bass.Sennheiser 550: Louder but quality/volume, no better than the freebies........ Lacking Bass (123db)Sony x71's: lovely sound and bass but too quite (100db) - although not as quiet as the Sen 500's !MY MAIN QUESTION THEREFORE IS :How will/do these compare to the others suggested here on the forums:...namely E3c's and....Panasonic RP-HJE50's (whick LOOK identicasl to the sony x71'sI would really like the quality and bass of the Sony's but the volume at least that of the 550's preferably louder. Also, what's the relationship between, and effect on volume of "decibel sensitivty" and "ohms"....doesn't seem to be one from my above trials ! ? - Although the 550's were rated at 123db and WERE the loudest (and equal to that of the freebies), the Sony X71's are lower than the 500's at 100db yet significantly higher in volume than the ridiculously quiet 500's !Thnx in advance.I don't wanna risk £80 on E3c's to find the volume is no better than the Sony's. I was lucky to be able to test-drive the above mentioned phones in my local shop...but they don't carry Etymotics/Shures. A440
Look in the menu under OPTION and change AVLS to AVLS OFF. You'll get more volume. I have an NHF-800 and use Shure E3s. They are more than loud enough.
zerodB
I can't speak for HiMD, but on NetMD, recording using SonicStage is noticably quieter than real-time recording. Try recording in real-time (if you're not doinf so to begin with). If necessary, adjust the gain/record volume levels. Be careful not to go over the 0db limit, otherwise you'll end up with clipping/digital distortion.

I'd also suggest doing the Volume Hack in any case as this should make the unit louder whatever phones are being used.Expensive but top range Sennheisers (580 / 590 etc) are really great with HI-MD.Cheers-K
sony_man
check the output on the headphones jack and the ohms on the headphones before buying.
