PALMI9483
I don't understand why my last poll (identical to this one) doesn't exist anymore... Anyway... my actual setup is composed by Sony nh1, Sennheiser PX200 and Future Sonics EM3. Now I'm looking for a pair of headphones (supra aural) that sounds good with my device and also with valve amps (I'm going to buy one of these in the next future). I'm very happy about my EM3 but they needs equalization to my ears. In fact the sound, when I connect them to my nh1 (when unequalized), is good in midrange but not bright at all in upper range. The sound completely changes when equalized, but now I want something I do not need to equalize. I'm quite happy of my Sennheiser but they don't have a good bass response to my ears. The genres I listen to are psychedelic, art, progressive and space rock, and sometimes classical.I found theese headphones on Ebay for around 140 euros the most expensive ones (Beyer and Grado) and 100 euros the cheaper ones(akg).keeping in mind all this informations and considering my budget of max 150 euros (but I would prefer under 130) can you tell me your opinions? Wich one? Why? thank you Andrea Edited July 14, 2005 by PALMI9483
KJ_Palmer
[bit of 'trouble' with the server I think, forums had to revert to yesterday's (weds 13.07.05) state it seems...]Anyway, I've again voted for the SR80... for the reasons given previously (ie. I like them)...
A440
If you can afford it, upgrade one notch to Grado SR 125. A big improvement on SR 80, totally clear and full-bodied and rocking. You won't believe what you have been missing. One problem: If you wear glasses, then the earcups of any Grados can press on your glasses frames and grow uncomfortable. But the sound is worth it. PALMI9483
The question: Sennheiser dt770m or Grado sr-125? I found them on Ebay about at the same price. I'm very attracted to Sennheiser for the feature described in the product's brochure and for the enthusiastic reviews, but many people say that Grado are almost the best headphones ever... I don't know. The only thing I'm sure of is that I need the clearest sound expecially for middle range and a good bass response. Has anybody listened to both these pairs of headphones? Can anybody help me choosing one of them?
A440
I have the Grado SR 125 and they are magnificently clear and punchy, my favorite headphones ever. (Someday I'll upgrade to better Grados.) A little Cmoy headphone amp helps them, but even plugged straight into the MD they sound excellent. There are two down sides to the Grados. If you wear glasses (like I do), the earcups press on the glasses frames and can get uncomfortable. Also, they leak sound to the room around you, so if you're trying not to disturb someone they're not the best choice. Sennheiser excels in comfort--I don't know about the leakage factor. DT 770m is Beyerdynamic, not Sennheiser. I wasn't that impressed with the Beyers I tried when headphone shopping--bass was inflated and not clear, and they were generally muddy. But I don't know if the ones I tried included that model. They look even heftier than the Grados and might have the same earcup problem. They are closed, though, so the sound stays in. Take a look at this page at www.headphone.comhttp://www.headphone.com/products/headphones/all-headphones/They sell the Beyers, but they're obviously not too fond of them. PALMI9483
DT 770m is Beyerdynamic, not Sennheiser. ← sorry for the mistake... I wanted to say Beyerdynamic but at the end I wrote Sennheiser... don't know why...however yes, they are closed and maybe I shouldn't disturb anyone... but it isn't a rilevant problem in my opinion. So I'm seriously considering to buy Grado's headphones. By the way...I'm going also to buy an headphone amp. Does the cmoy do a good job with theese cans? It seems too an handicraft unreliable device... Am I wrong? Isn't better an industrial one?
A440
I bought a handmade one from some college student on Ebay, and it adds zero noise and works great. Obviously look at the feedback, find someone who's been doing it for a while and use common sense. Many of the people who make them are pretty fanatical about quality. Just for example, look at this one:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...eName=WDVW&rd=1If you don't want to use Ebay, here's one that another minidisc user recommended:http://www.freewebtown.com/jaypolaski/cmoy/(With that one, I'd suggest spending the extra $10 on a volume control knob, but obviously you can use the volume control on the MD unit or remote control if you prefer.) I like the idea of something built by one electronics geek rather than a factory in China. If there's ever any problem, you have a real person to deal with. Nicely packed and shipped (US to London) Thoroughly recommended ←yes but... take a look http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt...5789448459&rd=1the same amp made by jay polaski with all these features will cost more than 50 $. The one in the auction costs 59 $ and has 2 opamps instead of one, gold-plated jacks, a truly professional and accurate assemblage, volume controller with built-in on/off switch (many other, like jay's one, are sold with no volume control which renders it unable to be used with devices with no built-in volume controls such as standalone DVD players, CD players and most importantly, the higher quality 'line out' output on portables. Last but not less important: it's upgradeable; in fact you can change the opamps in any time beacuse they're mounted in a gold-plated socket and are easily replaceable by the user.what do you think about? opinion pleasethanks
atrain
look very well featured, esp for a cmoy. giv it a try.
A440
It certainly looks impressive. You never know until you listen, of course.Other considerations: The listing doesn't show the dimensions, but it appears larger than the Altoids-tin Cmoys. Judging by the size of the battery snap, it's up to an inch longer and an inch wider, probably thicker too. That may not matter to you, but it is a consideration. The enclosure is plastic. Chu Moy suggests metal, or at least some kind of foil, for RF shielding. http://www.headwize.com/projects/showproj....e=cmoy2_prj.htm

I alerady have them on my cables. consider that those enclosures are specifically made for electronic parts http://www.hammondmfg.com/dwg8.htm so, I don't think they do not offer a kind of isolation at all. But the thing I most appreciate in that amp (the one in the auction) is the tidy assemblage, the two opamps and the quality (declared by the links on the part list). Considernig the size, it seems not much bigger than a mint box and if it is, I don't really matter because I will use it at home.In my opinion (and in my case) it seems better than Jay's amp but it's true, I can't say anything until I listen to it. So, I think (after earnt some other money... yesterday I bought a pair of grado's... ) I will take it in the next future.

They cames this morning, the best headphones I ever had for sound quality. But... they have bad points too. 1 I think they're very unconfortable especially after (just!) half of an hour listening. However I found a method to make them more confortable (socks cushions by headwize.com). 2 they're building quality seems not good as Sennheiser; I'm talking about the several (even if small) plastic imperfections. 3 If not drive by an headphone amp they doesn't deliver the sound quality delivered by amp driving (in my opinion). The worst things related to this cans are the building quality and maybe some bad features like that orrible and unconfortable headband and those so hard ear cushions. Anyway I think that these cans could be improved in those bad points by some modifications explaned at headwize. However the pro is that they express a truly awesome sound compared to my other headphones and in ear monitors.
