switow
Hi,I recently purchased a Sony Hi-MD Walkman MZ-RH10.I recorded some interviews with an external mic and now need to edit and transfer the files to someone.I've attempted to connect the player to my Mac PowerBook (G-3, running OS-X 10.3.9) using the USB wire. The computer sees the MD player, but it can not read the .hma files.I had an older version MD player and it was simple to take a cable from the optical line out to the computer and then capture with a program like Sound Recorder. I don't think the MZ-RH10 has an optical line out though - just the USB out.Is it possible to use this player with a Mac?HELP!Thanks.Michael
atrain
you are going to have to do it through the line out/headphone out. if you access to a pc that you can install sonicstage 3.2 on it can be done quicker but with the mac real time recording is the only option. turn off any eq & put the sound right up, this will simulate line out. then playback through the line in to your sound recorder. switow
Thanks!Taking the sound from the mic jack seems to work - though of course this is a real-time playback instead of just transfering a file. However, when i bring the sound into my Mac, i'm hearing a bit of static as well - and i don't hear this when i'm listening directly from the MD player through the headphones. Any ideas?I also take it that there's no way to convert the .hma files on a Mac to a more usable format, like .wav, .aiff or .mp3 ?Can you do this conversion on a PC and then bring it back to the Mac?Thanks again for your help.cheers,Michael
ROMBUSTERS
it's probably due to your soundcard or even the analogue line out of the MD player. If using something like a virtualPC for your Mac allows you to run SonicStage you *might* have luck uploading the file digitally
Kaotic
I hate people (especially mac users) doesn't do research well before they get into MD. Sony Sonicstage and OS X is simply doesn't communicate with each other, unless you have something to act in between. ie; virtual PC and window OS, that is on top of what you need to installed besides Sonicstage.back to topic. Switow, your RH10 can be used as USB mass storage. for the audio part, just follow whatever Atrain says.and no, I will say here again. Unless Sonicstage can be run natively on OS X, there is no chance of me installing sonicsuckstage, virtual pc, and window os on my Mac. never. switow
It's the mic out, not a "line out" as the MZ-RH10 doesn't appear to have a line out (unlike earlier models).I've tried with both mono and stereo cables. The static is worse with the stereo cable, but still there underneath with the mono one.
atrain
Can you do this conversion on a PC and then bring it back to the Mac?Thanks again for your help.cheers,Michael←very much so. using sonicstage or marcnets rendering software you can upload the recordings as a wav then move them back to the mac over a network, via the ums on a himd or flash drive, whatever. smkranz
My college-aged kid just had to have an iBook (mac) rather than a Windows laptop when he went to school. Fine. He now also wants a new minidisc recorder (he has an older Sony but I couldn't tell you which), to record rehearsals of himself and his various performance ensembles at school. Fine. His use of the MD, either old or new, would be greatly enhanced if he could get his recordings into his iBook. Unfortunately, in addition to not being compatible with SonicStage, his iBook has no microphone or any other audio input. So I came across this USB sound device (link below) and am curious as to whether any readers may have any experience with it. It's basically a USB-based external audio card. It gets mixed reviews on various sites I've found it, but for $30 at amazon.com it just might be a good stocking-stuffer, whether or not he gets a new MD recorder.http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic/
