SonicStage 3.1

I have just had the misfortune of loosing my hard drive and I have had to rebuild my Laptop. I had originally copied my Sonicstage .omg files to an external disk (thinking I wanted contingency - in case the worst happened - which it did !).

I installed SonicStage 3.1 and it seems to work okay apart from it does not recognise my NZ-MH1 (but that's another forum)

So I point SonicStage to my backed up files and get message "There is invalid rights management information in the OpenMG content".

It looks as though it thinks I am another User.

Is there anyway around this ?

sadly there's no solution for you you will have to re-rip all the music into sonicstage. this could have been avoided if you'd run the sonicstage backup tool, but with a crash you wernt to know that.

the graet news is sonicstage 3.2 has the option to rip music to atrac without the DRM key that makes music only work on the one computer, so baking up to an external disk is both easy & posible.

btw i think this is more fitting to continue in the software/support forum...

THIS IS NOT QUITE CORRECT -- BUT PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.

I've posted this info before but Sonic stage (3.0 / 3.1) WILL allow music to be copied to more than 1 computer (and be playable etc) provided you do the following.

1) NO Purchased music -- i.e you only use our own recordings / ripped CD stuff.

OK what you do is as follows.

Backup music on computer A with Sonic Stage Backup tool

Restore on Computers B / C / D / E or whatever.

Now restoring on Computers B / C / D / E etc will remove any existing library that's on that computer so before you start MERGE ALL YOUR MUSIC INTO ONE LIBRARY --in other words the library you originally backup should have all your music in it.

You'll find you can play this music / do whatever you want to with it on Computers B,C,D,E etc. as well of course on the original computer A.

I don't know about SS 3.2 --it might have less restrictions in it --which is great --but for current users who don't purchase Online Music there is NO problems copying and using libraries on different computers so long as Rule 1) -- No purchased Music, and Rule 2 any existing library on a target computer will we "Wiped" by the restore.

Hope this clears up a bit of confusion over this topic.

cheers

-- Thanks to the guys here I've just installed SS 3.2 which certainly is a worthwhile upgrade.

The Info I posted above was for SS 3.0/3.1 where there was a lot of confusion about "copying" music to more than one Computer.

In anycase even with SS 3.2 it's still a good idea to ALWAYS TAKE BACKUPS.

Okay thanks for that.

If I could get SS 3.2 to install then I can try the "back-up and restore" ?

Here's my big problem now ... apart from "losing" my data.

OPENMG does not want to install. ie) it is not in Add/Remove programs and when I click on the SonicStage 3.2 icon or Connect it says "Cannot find the OpenMG Secure Module"

I do get a successful completion message and I reboot, but still no OpenMG. There is no log or message so I can't see what is wrong.

I have tried various atempts, even tried the German version of 3.1 first and if I go back to 2.0 (on CD) OpenMG does install, but this is the wrong version for 3.2

I have installed so many different Software packages in my life, but I have never had so many problems than with SonicStage.

If I ever do get OpenMG to install, then I'll probably be back with it not recognising my Hi MD NZ-MH1

I believe I follwed the uninstall process correctly - remove references in Registry, delete Sony Sub directories, uninstall through add/remove programs.

IBM T23 1Gb

MS Windows 2000 SP4 (brand new build due to loosing my original hard drive)

Help ! Please !

yeah but kyle he's had a harddisk crash - there's no original sonicstage to back up from.

Hi -- yes that of course is the problem -- however I added the notes so people could avoid this problem in future

-of course if the data's gone then you'll just have to re-rip it -- I've got over 80 GB worth of music at 256 kbs - so I don't EVER want to have to re-create this library again.

Incidentally regular backup is also a good idea not just for your music but for your ordinary files and Operating System as well.

Imperial Eagle -- try the following

From a Clean Windows install try the SS 3.0 / 3.1 available from this site. Install it with the Install from Server option. Install also Simple Burner.

Then once that works try the same process for SS 3.2

Now I'm running Windows XP so I don't know if there are specific issues related to Windows 2000 -- I rather doubt it however as SS has been out quite a long time and the Open Secure Module been around even longer than that (Open Jukebox etc).

Your problem could also be linked to the 'Connect Music store' address that SS thinks you should use --even if you have NO intentions of using the service (I certainly don't) . If you are in Europe and you got the US version the IP addresses will not match and can cause all sorts of problems -- like Music available in one region not in another aka region coded DVD-Discs.

Anything later than SS 2.3 seemed to install fine on various machines I've got so I'm at a loss to understand why it's not installing.

Cheers

Kyle, I think you are on to something there.

I have eventually managed to install 3.1 but I think it is using the same OpenMG Secure Module from V2.0 which I had on CD.

Connect comes up and knows about my Userid (e-mail address) but says I can't get in because i'm not on the right machine (well that's my interpretation).

Looks like I have to re-rip and yes I will use Backup in future. I was silly to think that copying my .OMG files would be good enough !!

Just got 2 things to worry about now :-

1. My Hi-MD is still not recogized - at a loss now do to de-installing / installing all various flavours and no joy. Hi-Md is recognized through Explorer and help me recover some 1Gb of photos just now. But SonicStage does not want to know.

2. Install 3.2 but I do not believe it will install OpenMG later version. About to try.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have tried various atempts, even tried the German version of 3.1 first and if I go back to 2.0 (on CD) OpenMG does install, but this is the wrong version for 3.2

That gave me an Idea! .... but anyone please feel free to shoot me down.

Before I had the SS crash I was using version 2.3................what if all the files that are trapped, could still play with the openmg from that 2.3 version?

I am willing to go back to 2.3 and find out if that will correct the files to play again, but some one will have to give me a link to download 2.3 cause I myself cannot find one.

Thanks in advance to anyone!

I also believe I follwed the uninstall process correctly - remove references in Registry, delete Sony Sub directories, uninstall through add/remove programs, but as previously posted I do believe more and more it was from codec packs corrupting registries, thats my story and Im sticking to it!

Thanks for everyones help!

  • 1 month later...

I do not have a minidisk, I only use SS on my computer....................

ok, but do you have any other device that requires SS? (like a Sony HD-based player etc...) 'cause if you don't, just accept the loss ('cause I have never read about any solutions on here I'm afraid) and find yourself a decent audio player/library thingy!

ppl put up with SS as it is the only way to get stuff on/off their minidiscs or other Sony devices, but if you do not have to...why use it? there are much better applications out there (for free!)

so give yourself a break and enjoy the no-SS life
