"" Sony is the "best brand" in America, according to a national poll by Harris Interactive. The interesting thing about the poll is that the respondents give spontaneous answers when asked what they think are the three best brands. On the one hand, that's awesome for Sony--the majority of people, when considering the best brands out there, just bust out with "Sony," "Dell," and "Kraft" (1, 2, and 3, respectively). Then again, this could just be the result of having a nice, short, easy-to-remember name. ""

Kraft makes everything you eat. No joke, if you think they don't make a certain product you can be darn sure they own the company that does.

Dell is the #1 PC maker in North America for a reason. Cheap, good systems with great warrenties that cover literally everything (see: i can accidentally drop my laptop out of my 5th floor window and they will replace it for free)

Sony makes great electronics with style (I love me my Sony Grand Wega HDTV). Now if only they could get their software/music/movie businesses to run like their electronics/games ones they'd be unbeatable

Sony has cheap, reliable products that work well (and awesome TVs)

Dell has CHEAP computers

Kraft makes the macaroni and all those commercials tongue.gif

it's odd that sony's regarded as cheap in the US, here it's alway been marketed & priced at a premium consumer end. things are evening up what with sales dropping to lg, samsung et al but there'd be no perception here of cheap, maybe build quality but never cheap.

Yeah Sony hasn't gone the cheap route for decades. If anything they usually opted to charge a premium just because they can.

I saw a brand survey for Japan, which basically says

-- Sony is still the #1 brand in the mind of consumers surveyed - IIRC Toyota and Honda are top 3, Apple is outside the top 10

-- but Sony has steadily dropped in the survey of business people, with a notably low score in innovation

-- Sony-related brands (eg. Sony Music, the individual product lines) have all declined in image during the last year; the iPod as a brand scored pretty much on par with the Apple brand.

The survey and article's final words on Sony is that, like all large companies do at some point, Sony's banking on the goodwill it built in the past. A friend saw this and his first reaction was "well that's what Apple did in the early 90s!" biggrin.gif
