hi all

I need a little help.

I tried today to record on my MZ-N505 a new album.

This album has 20 songs .

After the software finished tranfering all songs,

I discovered that only few are playable ...

(about 10 good songs and 10 corrupted songs).

for example,

I press play on track number 12 and the md is stuck till I choose another track....

I press play on track number 13 and it's OK ...

SO .... I erased the disc and tried to record the same disc again .

Now I can hear track number 12 but track number 13 is corrupted ... wacko.gif

BTW, it was a brand new MD...

anyway, I replaced the disc with another brand new disc

and it has the same problem ... blink.gif

I have the latest MD software (web installer)

and my windows has all updates.

I thought maybe I need to clean the lenses but

THERE ARE NO PROBLEM WITH PLAYING OTHER DISCS !!!

what can it be ?

Were you using SonicStage or SimpleBurner to transfer the record/CD?

Normal(SP) or LP2.

Perhaps you could try using the other software method to see if the problem is still there.

There several brands of MD head and lens cleaners available such as Sony, TDK and Crest. One of those may help.

I had some problems with the openMG jukebox 2.2 ..

so I installed the latest SonicStage (web installer)

and the problems are the same.

There are same problems with both LP2 and LP4 ..

I didn't try recond on SP.

all i'm asking is...

Is there a possibility I need to buy a new MD player??? unsure.gif

or can I fix mine ??? rolleyes.gif

There are a lot of cleaners: they're shaped like a MD, you just pop them in.

I'm not recommending these retailers, just thought I'd show you some links. Shop around.

Sony makes one:

http://www.x10.com/electronics/allcategori...ny_MD-8HCL.html

TDK makes one (though this seems like a high price):

http://www.audiocubes.com/product/TDK_MD-H...ns_Cleaner.html

Maxell makes one:

http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDeta...gcfkmdffhdfif.0

Even RadioShack makes one:

Ronca79,

Try the MD head/lens cleaner first, it is cheaper than a new MD recorder. I think head or lens is the same thing for MD equipment.

As A440 said they look just like a minidisc.

Have you tried a different brand of blank MD.

Are you recording from a CD or importing MP3s ?

If you are importing the songs to Sonic Stage (3.2 is the latest) have you tried listening to the songs on your PC to see if the later ones are ok.

How old is the N505 and how heavily was it used? If it has seen a lot of use it may indeed be on its last legs.

If you are considering cleaning the lens that is a very good start, however, you should also clean the OWH (over-write head) as well. There are separate discs (as well as 2-in-1 discs) that can do this for you. I prefer to do manual cleaning myself (q-tip + rubbing alcohol) but you should know what you are doing before attempting that. The lens is easy enough to clean this way but the OWH can be quite tricky and often requires the removal of the lid of the player (which I would not attempt if you do not know what you are doing). If you're unsure it is better to go with a commercially-available cleaning disc.

If cleaning fails to clear up the problem and the unit is well-used and out of warranty, it is certainly plausible that you'd need a new unit. On the plus side, if the N505 still plays fine you could use it as a player upon getting a new unit.

well...

you asked so many questions ... so I have to answer all ...

A440 ...

thank you for these links but,

you said that you're not recommending these retailers ...

so what do you recommand ???

bogon07 ...

I tried new disc and I still having the same problems

(for now 2 brand new discs was fucked up ... so I think it's a player problem).

I'm importing MP3s ... and the originals files are OK.

MDX-400

I opened my player and tried cleanning the lens (q-tip + rubbing alcohol)

... and it didn't help sad.gif

I opened my player several times cause the buttons didn't work.

I did it quite well cause my player was 100% OK after my repairs.

can I fix this head ???

I can do it by myself, I just need some pictures/explanations ...

can you help me more ???

thank you all guys ... I'm waiting for your replays !

P.S

I live in israel and it's very expensive around here

(I'm a non-working studend blink.gif )

anyway, MD is not that popular ...

and I don't know yet where I can find the discs for cleaning wacko.gif

ronca79,

If you are feeling very brave you could try consulting the service manual for the N505. It is down near the bottom of the page under "Minidisc Service Manuals" not the User manuals so you can see which parts MDX-400 refers to but take note of the warning that you could disable your Minidisc in service mode.

http://www.minidisc.org/part_Manuals.html

As you were importing MP3, could some of them be encoded slightly differently to to the earlier ones? I've had a few which would not transfer across via SonicStage but that is slightly different from your problem where the seem to transfer but are unplayable.

Try erasing one of those new discs and then recording or transferring some completely different music or albums on to it.

hmm

For several years I'm using the same software to encode/decode my audio files.

I tried to erase the disc and to put other songs on it

and I still having the same problems.

these problems happened in openMG 2.2 and also in the latest SonicStage.

I will try to look on the manual (thank you for this link)

maybe I will find something useful ..

i'm going mad !!!

why is it recording sometimes good and sometimes bad ???

I just finished looking in that manual ...

Overwrite head is mention twice...

and there are no instructions how to clean it  sad.gif

can anyone explain how to clean the overwrite head ???

Yep. If you simply open the lid of your unit as if you were changing discs and look up at the lid of the player, directly above where the lens is (because the OWH is physically connected to the pickup sled) you will see the OWH.

It is a very small (and therefore delicate) part. It is a little white square with a very small metal square within that. (Just like a cassette deck's record head, if you remember what those look like! Only a LOT smaller.)

You simply have to gently clean that in the same manner as the lens. If the OWH is bent or misaligned in any way then that will cause problems too. That is why you have to be careful not to do that. If you remove the unit's lid you can do an eyeball check of the alignment. With the lid removed and then the frame of the lid closed (or at least lowered) the OWH should be precisely over the centre of the lens. Furthermore the OHW should follow the lens for the entire sled travel--i.e. if you push the sled to the centre the OWH should follow, if you push it to the edge it should follow as well.

If all of this checks out and you've cleaned both the lens and the head, and you're certain that it isn't a problem with SS or the files being transferred, I'd say it is time for a new unit (yours could be repaired but with an N505 repair will definitely be more costly that buying a new and better unit, like a HiMD wink.gif ).

I hope you can do it yourself with MDX-400's very clear instructions, since it sounds like you're better at home repairs than I am.

If you still want to try the head cleaners, I don't know where to get this sort of thing in Israel. I'd try Froogle (at www.google.com) with the model numbers for the head cleaners.

Sony MD-8HCL

TDK MD-HLC1SF

Maxwell MD-CL

OK

so I got home and clean the square above my lens...

there is no change

I have few more details to tell you:

when I tried to tranfer files to my MD

everything was fine till song number 5 (and after it was not good !)

my player didn't copy it well ...

I heard the song with many clicks and sometimes

the song had some cut offs (for about half a second).

after 30 sec of the song it become more stable but the cut off didn't go.

what is it ???

should I get a new MD player ?

or I just need to clean it's head ?
