Sony MZRH10 -New Owner Help

Just purchased a SONY MZRH-10 after reading some of the recommendations on this forum. Looks fantastic & I was hoping it would be a welcome addition to my audio equipment. I already own a full size Sony MD.

I decided upon this as the MD equipment supplied was unrealiable & I therefore wanted my own equipment which I had confidence in.

Took the Md out of the box & charged it up. Whilst I was doing that I persused the user manual.....which tells me that you can only record using the new Hi-MD format unsure.gifexcl.gif

The problem I have is this.... I bought the MD for the purpose of counducting broadcast quality interviews for my local football team HIBERNIAN . for a local radio station.

The work is however unpaid, although I do get into the game free.

The interviews are conducted after each game home & away with the Hibs manager & opposing team management & are then edited & used on the sports bulletins. I use a quality condenser mic.

I would then normally drop the MD back at the studio for editing. the MD players there are professional Tascam MD's which play both normal & LP MD's. Don't think they support the new format however.

The basic question is this... Is it just a case of downloading a bit of software onto my Md to enable me to record straight onto standard MD?

OR..... I stuck with a bit of kit, which won't do the job? As I've already used It I probably wont be able to return the goods.

I'm afraid I'm not very technical, so any help or advice would be appreciated.

Best Regards

Keith

hi, welcome to MDCF...

your question actually has some kind of a double answer:

- yes you are stuck with a machine that won't do what you want... the RH10 is a 2nd gen HiMD and only the 1st gen HiMD's could record in the old MD formats (though you can use old discs...but only in HiMD mode which is unplayable through old equipment)

- but: HiMD allows you to upload you HiMD recordings through USB to your PC, on which you can then edit all you want and with SonicStage you can put the edited recordings onto discs in a format that can be played with old(er) equipment (if necessary)

so, if you learn how to edit on a PC (which isn't that difficult if you use something like the free audacity; just check the downloads section) then you have gained a bunch of features in stead of lost some

just use this thread as a guide to flawless uploading and learn to edit with audacity (within a couple of hours you will have got the hang of all the basic stuff, which probably is more than the older equipment could do)

hope this helps

You are not stuck, as said above this option is now wide open to you. (and may be faster than doing things in realtime.

Use the new Hi-MD to record your interview in Hi-SP or PCM.

Use sonicstage V3.2 (allows unlimited checkin's) on a PC, upload the recordings onto the computer and edit them as you need to.

Use sonicstage to copy the edited file onto a normal MD in SP or LP2 format. The RH10 allows using sonicstage to make an old style MD disc.

Really? Because I think someone told me that this wasn´t possible. Only HiMD formats for the RH10.

the software transfer method always worked, it's just that the 2nd gen models can't record in the legacy formats anymore

the biggest consequence of this is that 2nd gen HiMD have no option whatsoever to produce real SP anymore as the software won't allow this (only the disguised LP2 fake SP)

Oh yeah, forgot about that. So only SP-wrapped LP2 transfers for 2nd gen HiMD, even with the SonicStage improvements?

Thanks for all your help. thumbsup.gif

Used the new MD at the Falkirk v Hibernian game on sat & the audio quality is excellent., broadcast quality in fact. The Hibs Manager Tony Mowbray even noticed I had a new MD!!

Had a few probem s uplaoding some of the audio, but got there in the end & emailed it in MP3 format to the studio.

Cheers

Keith
