I'm not converting from a cd i so i'm not losing too much quality, right ?

on the contrary... no matter how good (cfr SP) or how bad (cfr LP4) the lossy compression is you're using... the main rule is GIGO: garbage in = garbage out.

what do I mean with this? well, if you rip from CD->LP4, you will have a better result than MP3->LP4 because a lossy compression (LP4) leaves out info so starting from full info (CD) will give the codec a better option to select which info to leave out, while using MP3 (another lossy compression so already reduced info) means two lossy compressions are used so info will be dropped two times (and no, they do not simply drop the same info :P )

bottom line... whenever you use a lossy compression, just go for the best quality source material to start from, as the worse the source is, the worse the result

I wish to understand why real player will not allow me to change the bit rate on my net md. I have a mz-dn430 and have tried to transfer music with sonic stage, but continue to get error, I have called sony and their only response was that have os is windows xp-upgrade and ahve acctually said that there was nothing that they could do for me. This has become a very frustrating issue for me because of the fact that if you can't call customer on the product that you bought an extended policy on and get help, who is going to help you. I have again, Sony feels they need to provide the world with products, however, not all these products are great and should have never been sold. It is time for Sony to stop resting on the past reputation of greatnes.
