hi..

i'm not sure if this has been asked before...

anyway..

i just bought a mz rh 10 hi md player....

i was wondering...

does it run on regular duracell or energizer AA batteries ??

or will it work only with the supplied nimh rechargable batteries??

thank you...

Welcome to the forum.

The MZ-RH10 works just fine with regular AA batteries attached in its external dry battery case.

I've had my Sony RH-10 for 5 months now. Here is some advice on battery life from the gumstick and external battery case.

If you are doing recordings using Hi-MD media in the PCM audio mode? Follow these steps:

-Turn off the "quick mode" under the Menu options setting. If you don't the gumstick battery will drain even if you do NOT use the recorder.

-Fully charge your gumstick battery.

-Use a brand new alkaline battery in the external battery case. Do NOT use a NiHM rechargable battery. They drain faster than conventional alkaline batteries.

-Top off the "charge" on the gumstick right before you leave.

-Turn the "quick mode" back "ON" right before recording.

-Do not rely on the internal gumstick battery to give you long recordings. Use the external battery case if space permits.

I found this out the hard way. I lost part of a "Live" recording. I tried recording only with the internal gumstick. After 90 min of PCM. The battery indicator showed half life remaining. I changed discs and added the exteranl battery pak. The recorder said: "NOT enough power to record". I had to REMOVE the internal battery and rely on the external battery to start the recorder and finish recording.

The long battery life (33 hours) Sony claims is strickly for playback: NOT recording. They list PCM recording at 5.5 hours. How come I only got 90 minutes? Hi-MD requires huge power to record in PCM. Sony needs to make a Hi capacity gumstick to replace the current NH-14WH.

The recorded sound quality in the PCM mode is EXCELLENT. No compression and every bit as good as DAT.

I created an external battery pack from 2 D size batteries and a case I bought at Radioshack, I took my RH10 in to fit the battery pack to the 3 volt adaptor, since I dont have a soldering iron I just twisted the wires together, plugged into the 3 volt input and so far I have recorded 10hrs without recharging, of course if I want I just press recharge and my gumstick gets recharged from the D cell batteries. Next on my list of to does is modified the external battery pack to work with D size batteries. I have pictures if interested

Not true for high current draining devices like HiMD - a high capacity NiMH will last way longer. In a test, i got 8.5 hours continuous recording time in PCM, 16h in HiSP and 17 in HiLP with one fully charged 2300 mAh NiMH rechargeable. More than enough for me. I don't remember exact numbers, but with alkalines it was significantly less. Although i'm using a NH700, it shouldn't be much different with a RH10. The combination of internal gumstick + external NiMH should give even longer battery life.

How did you record for 8 hours in PCM? 5-6 discs?

If I were to record in HiSP the gumstick will be fine for how long? At least 3-4 hours right?

The 90min PCM limitation is too short for many of the gigs I would like to record! Wish I could record - but switching discs makes me nervious!

About 5-6, yes.

At least - if it is in good condition propably significantly longer.

We need a portable HQ HD recorder.

So you used the external pak with the 2300 mAh NiMH rechargable but removed the gumstick battery? I serious doubt you could record for 8.5 hours in the HI-MD PCM mode using the above battery. Do you have a MZ-RH10 recorder? Net MD recorders are completely different in power consumption.

I used a 2100 mAh NiMH battery fully charged but not brand new. The point I was trying to make is: the supplied gumstick battery is NOT adequate for (2) HI-MD PCM discs (186 minutes recording time). With the gumstick + the external battery pak attached; it is. But that's some additional bulk to add to the recorder.

I would just like to say that the "quick" mode actually uses LESS power in the short term than starting up the disk again!

Also hi capacity NiMH cells hold more power than duracells or energizers!

Infact the modern NiMH cell will actually hole more power than lithium cells. Lithiums only advantage is that it is light weight

And for people who are new; the screw on dry cell compartment is known as a sidecar -_-

hi..

thanksfor all this info...

why i ask this question is because i read a post about the ac adaptor not being compatible with the country...

i live in india...

my player is still being shipped to me...i have not yet tried the unit...

i wanted to know if i could only rely on the external battery to supply power incase the adaptor dosent work properly...incase i cant use the gum stick or charge it at all...

it may take a while before i can find the right ac adaptor for the player that will work in this country...(or do i require only a connector to convert the sort of pins..not sure)

i have to wait and see...once it arrives...

this is my first md unit ever...

cant wait...

anyway...

thank you...

Just another question to throw in here....if you have a powered mic...will you save on power consumption?..i.e. the mic won't be using any of the MD bat so i assume you would, if this were the case how long would you say you would get out of the gumstick bat on PCM -> powered mic?

Cheers

i have the US version and the adapter works fine. just use a step down ie. from 220 to 110...i charge the Ni MH battery with no hasssle...

dont forget the step down though

cheers

I dont see why you can't, only difference is you have to leave your nh1 in its charging stand, you would connect your size D battery pack where the AC adapter plugs in on the stand, your AC adapter tells you the polarity of the connector plus it also tells you the DC output. So, with that information you can build your own battery pack.

If your still confused heres an interesting site, that I found to help with my digital camera, I took the info from it and applied it to my RH10 make your own Battery pack. Its great because he explains all about batteries and load as well as how to make it.

I liked his webpage so much I sent him a donation to help others who were in the same predicament as me. Besides I also don't have to spend hours explaining the technical mumbo jumbo. With that info you can go to a local radio shack or for me a hobby store (Im now in finland) and get what you need.

Hope this helps, matter of fact he mentions using a size F battery, I didn't even know they existed

Did you notice the significantly increased power consumption when externally powered , i.e. the disc motor spinning constantly instead of occasionally to save power? This should be taken into consideration.

No I did't notice, Ive used the same pair of size D batteries to recharge the gumstick 6 times as well as record for I guess about 12 Hours. One night I left it on all night to listen if I snore. :P

I just tried plugging it in and listening to the disc motor spinning vs with it unplugged the motor stopped within a minute for both, of course I dont have a stop-watch. (maybe Ill try that tomorrow?).

But leaving it alone in stop(cancel) mode with the RH10 plugged in and not plugged in the OLED light went off about the same time as well. By this Im assuming(U know what that means) that there is no increased power consumption and the disc motor doesnt spin constantly. Basically the same thing when you have the AC adapter plugged in.

Hope this helps

Some people say "Grin and Bear it" I say "Smile and change it"

ps for those that dont know what assume means, it could make an "ASS of U and ME"

Well, at least the NH700 does in all three rec modes (even Hi-LP!). Playback behaves normally , i.e. idle periods in between. Good to see that they might've changed it for the RH10, it seems like a real waste to me. How about a firmware upgrade, Sony?

I didn't try to record with it plugged into my RH10 I just played it. So with that in mind I went and tried recording and listened to the motor. You are right greenmachine the motor stays on all the time, as soon as I disconnect the battery pack 15 or so seconds later the motor quiets down or as you call it idles. As soon as I plug it back into the 3 volt in the motor starts up and stays on, I left it recording for 8 minutes and came back and sure enough the motor is still running. So the next test for me will be to attaching a size D battery to the battery pack attachment and see if the motor stays on continuouslly. if not then I will use that approch for an extended battery pack. Id be curious How the NH1 reacts if you use a battery pack into the charging stand

Maybe Ill have to buy one now that the price is right.

Sorry greenmachine I didn't test it right the first time

well time will tell

That should be a much more efficient way ... if you manage to get proper connections somehow. The NH700 consumes ~350-550 mA while writing 1GB discs (motor spinning), but only ~70-95 mA during 'idle' periods (powered by one 1.2V NiMH cell). Thanks for testing.

Have a look at his article with pics. It shows you exactly that!

Tell me what you think of it.
