Is it possible to store Mp3 files via a 1st Gen. Hi-MD device?

You can save them in data mode, but they won't be directly playable. Transfer in audio mode is only possible with >1st gen.

I was afraid of that. So I won't be able to use a player only unit for Mp3's (if Sony will ever build one) and the NHF800 as a downloader. Thank you very much for the answer

transcoded mp3's sound just fine in first generations, remember mp3 is not a fidelity mode, if you want the best sound go right off the cd, otherwise it is a very easy job to get mp3 onto your unit, and the disc will play in a second generation unit, it will be in Atrac not mp3.

You will still also have the mp3's on your puter if you want to do something else with them
