I bought an EH1 a couple of weeks ago. I really like it...great sound, great battery life, lighter than the other Hi-MDs I have (an 800 and NH1). Only beef I have is that there was no English manual that came with the unit...and in fact the menu display on the remote comes up in Japanese characters. The basic operational buttons are tagged in English, and on the 40ELK remote, so are the basic functions (sound, mode, etc.). But for getting in to customize it a bit....can't do it.

Is there a way to switch the menu language from Japanese to English? If not, is there a translation somewhere that matches the menu lines of Japanese characters to a corresponding English command? Maybe just an English version of the menu tree for this unit and I could at least make some attempts to get in there?

At minimum, I really, really want to get rid of the beep that goes with the on/off and the beep-beep-beep that goes with pause.

Try this with a disc in the player:

Press and hold the menu button on the remote then:

1) Select: 各種設定 / Option

2) Within "Option," scroll down and select: 表示言語 / Language

3) Select: 英語表示 (English Language)

Once you have done that I think you have to switch the menu mode to advanced to get to the Beep function.

Thanks, Rich. Actually, right after posting I dug a little more into the manual and found that in the full breakdown of the menu, they do have English translations of the menu titles next to the Japanese characters, so I was able to match the Japanese characters enough to get to the Language function. Now it's in English. Whew.

Functions seem pretty similar to other recent Sonys so I'll get by without a regular manual, I guess...though if a translation came out, I'd love to get one.

Yes it's not too difficult too figure out the menu tree from the manual. I dont think there is an english version of this manual as it was only ever released in Japan. But if you need help with any specifics let us know and there are plenty of people here who can help. Enjoy!

Frequent lurker, infrequent poster...though I think I can catch up on the past three years fast:

"Holy crap! This HI-MD format sounds sweet! Is it backward compatible?"

"Got the 600 at Target! HI-SP is great! Don't bother with the smallest compression size!"

"Where are the &*&*$^ Hi-md blanks?"

"Got an NH1 and returned the 600 to Target (90 day return policy)! Amazing!"

"Where are the &*#%$ hi-md decks?"

"Holy crap! Is MD really over?"
