Maybe 'buds aren't so bad after all..

Well, for about a month now I've been using my MDR-EX81's with a MZ-NH900 or the NW-HD3. For a very long time, I was very anti-'bud and vowed to never wield one, let alone wear them because I was weary of their effects on your hearing. My opinion has changed greatly -- earbuds may be one of the coolest products I've had the chance to use. I think the principal issue was that I wasn't using them in the right environment -- I realized at work that I can speak on the phone with a headset and have an earbud in the free ear. It works very well, and it's allowed me to really delve back into music again. I think we all take a hiatus from music at one point or another because of obligations, distractions, and so forth; I really was in a rut there for a while.

I also enjoy earbuds because they are ultraportable, great sounding, and allow me to wear and remove them steadfast. As the portable audio era continues to bloom we will see greater emphasis on quality of the components within that perhaps one day may come to rival high end home audio systems (maybe in the next ten years). DAP's are becoming so commonplace that it's really necessary for companies to delve into quality because every other aspect of functionality has been conquered.

Earbuds also excel in live recording situations for quick monitoring of microphone input -- this was crucial during a recent recording I made with my NH900 at a church.

I think that I may try a Etynomics 'bud next year as well.

"" greater emphasis on audio quality "" in the portable audio era: I certainly hope so, though am not convinced. Lossy compression has become the defacto standard now. While video technologies are moving towards HDTV, bluray etc etc, audio seems to go the other way. people are getting satisfied with 128k recordings. even online music store sell songs at 128/132 k.

coming back on topic, i really like the sony stock buds that came with the rh10. does the job. on the move, i like my ex71. not as loud as the stocks, but provide decent isolation.

I have tried various but have yet to find any decently sounding ones. As long as sound quality doesn't improve dramatically, i'll stay away. I agree with the portability advantage though. Maye a stupid question, but can these expensive 'Etynomics' compete with decent full-sized headphones?

I wish I knew about the Ety's -- I'd love to demo them myself instead of taking a blind plunge and purchasing them. Any Ety users want to speak about how they preform in comparison to the higher-end Sony 'buds? I imagine it's like night and day..

veez, do you have any problems with keeping the buds in your ear? I have problems sometimes keeping the MDR-EX81 on at times.

p.s. I updated the inital post with a pic.

not really. i use the largest size rubber things. i have very big ears and find the ex71 very comfortable.

you may find this funny, but it took me a while to master the correct technique to wear the ex71 :)

also, do you have the small cord verison which is made long by that extender? i have issues with the weight of the joint..
