Toddz
Dear All Has anyone any opinions on the best mini disc media to record to,i know they are becoming rarer each day to buy but i bought some colour maxell discs today from argos strange design seemed to be very girly (sorry ladies) all butterfly and pink design orange and blue not that it matters just you know :-)So my question was is there an advantage to buying more expensive discs is there a sound quality difference ??? or is it just the build quality that people like perhaps the more expensive discs will last longer?? i remeber a whie ago buying some tdk colour discs and they seemed to be so thin in comparison to my sony ones....if anyone has any thoughts let me knowmany thnxToddz
garcou
To my (long) experience Sony and TDK are the best: never lost any information with them and their resistance to heat is excellent, especially with car units. What differs is how good the disc is at keeping out dust. The better they don this, the less you get errors etc. The sony md 2000, with a completely metal shell, was classed as a proffessional disc,As was the tdk XA-PRO. Those discs cost something like 20 pounds for one. I have like 25 ES blanks, and although they dont sound any different, they supposedly have lower error rates and prevent dust better. It's best to stay away from discs with plastic shutters also.
KrazyIvan
Yup, just stay away from discs with plastic shutters and Memorex and you will be fine. I did have a bad experience with the standard Fuji blanks (the black ones) also. None of my Sony units could read them. After formatting in my Sharp unit they worked but I will probably never buy those again.

Deanage
all my sonys have worked really well up to nowOne of my old Sony 74min discs is screwed; the shutter doesn't close at all when you remove the disc from the unit and now the disc itself has all sorts of fingerprints and crap on it. Still works. Never had a problem with Sony Hi-MD/MD's (come to think of it, I've never had a problem with any Sony appliance I've owned). Artstar
I never had a Sony MD that worked reliably in my MDX-C8900 head unit. More often than not, I would have the discs not reading in the unit for a few times until maybe the 4th or 5th consecutive insertion, then it would play but occasionally, a track would glitch for a couple quarter notes here and there.Admittedly, I never tried the discs in any other MD head unit simply because I stand alone in my circle of acquaintances when it comes to choice of media Otherwise, my MZ-R50 and MZ-NH1 can play them happily.Nevertheless, the TDK's I've used (MD, MD-XG and XA Pro which I used exclusively for all live recordings) have all been absolutely FLAWLESS. Two thumbs up to the TDK's, half a thumb up for the Sony's.Now then, time for TDK HiMD blanks. Until then, I'm buying me 50 HiMD discs because they may become a rare commodity since Sony decided to axe MD in Australia.
MDGB2
Only disc I've ever had trouble with are Hi-Space discs.A couple would skip after about an hour, solution - record less than full capacity (bout 50mins)Two out of three hundred and odd ain't bad, damn sight more reliable than CD/DVD-R! DARRKCLOUD
I have never had any trouble with MD. I am using Sony's Hi-MD, and TDK MD-RXD discs.
Toddz
On mY Quest for tOday which was for buying more mini disc blanks in watford I CAME ACROSS MAPLINS selling tdk colour 80m discs x10 pack for nearly £14.00 they only had one pack and not surprised the price was not advertised anywhere.... After managing to buy marillion marbles live from hmv for £5.99 which for hmv was a superb price,i was walking out of the sotre and spotted a huge container full of md`s tdk, maxell and sony all colour versions in x5 packs they were priced at £6.99 for one or buy two get third free...... so bought myself some sonys the quality of these md`d does seem better than anyone elses so shopping trip turned out to be a plesant surprise for once.... still not recovered from seeing butterflys on the maxwell disk i purchased last week really......thnxtoddz
Sunny
I've got an extensive collection of mainly Maxell discs. For some reason, the blue ones always seemed to get corrupted! In general they were fine, but in my experience, only put stuff you don't mind losing on the blue ones! (1 yellow one gave me some grief too.) Found Sony's and TDKs good, no problems.Until then, I'm buying me 50 HiMD discs because they may become a rare commodity since Sony decided to axe MD in Australia. OFF TOPIC:So you're partly responsible for nabbing all of those hot HiMD discs from the minidisc.com.au sale?! Good work man, but you could have left a couple for us international people! Don't blame you though, at those prices! It's just such a shame it's necessary to abandon the format there. (And there probably were some left when they opened for international shipping, I just didn't log-on in time!)
Viv
I picked up a real bargain yesterday at Comet South Ruislip: packs of five TDK 74-minute XS-iV MDs for just 99p a pack. Don't all rush there as I bought the only four packs they had left. I'd bought some previously when they were selling them off at £3-98 a pack which I thought was good, and they work just fine. The only ones I've ever had a problem with are Sharp MDs which my MZ-R900 just refused to record on, though they were fine with all my other MD units, and the MZ-R900 was happy with every other MD blank I ever chucked at it. Toddz
Viv That was a superb bargain to be honest,i was very surprised to see mini discs left in hmv all the packaging was a little dirty and ripped on the ones i purchased seems as if they had a lot of old stock and threw it all in a basket but felt good anyway walking out of hmv with mini discs was just waiting for the alarm buzzer to go off, just closed my eyes and kept walking...:-)regardstoddz
