does anyone know if any companies apart from sony are planning to make blank hi md discs?

there are lots of companies making 74,80 minute md's..i cant find anyone making 1 gb himd apart from sony...

thanks

It would be interesting to know how many factories there are producing MD blanks, I think. With the CD and DVD market, there's a lot of branding going on but not many real manufacturers, for instance. I wonder if that holds true for standard MD (or if there was a way to find out on the PC like there is with CD/DVD).

It would be nice to see more from other manufacturers if it brought the cost down and/or availability up. Otherwise, I'm not too fussed.

Personally I'd love it if more companies made Hi-MD media. We wouldn't have to rely on Sony's production rates to get more of the things. I currently only have six Hi-MD's, four of which are still wrapped. I want more but I have yet to find a place that sells them around here.

Illogical conspiracy theory: Hi-MD was deliberately castrated by other levels of Sony management who were planning to axe the division/product line anyway. Hi-MD usage was given a lot of restrictions under the guise of 'copyright protection', and blank media was never licenced to other companies for production. This would help prevent the spread and profitability of Hi-MD, making it easier to axe in future fiscal years.

This is illogical because it stands to reason that a company would want all of their divisions to do well, and would not sabotage its own workings.

Just a few weird ramblings...

i wish that even though sony is stopping himd they would handover the rights to manufacture blank himd media to other companies...i guess that if it had continued then over time sony would eventually do this..

i dont think himd(players) technology is manafactured by anyone else unlike md that was also manufactured by others like sharp or denon ...etc....

hopefully sony will continue selling blank himd media for atleast a few more years...
