banjo
Dixons in Stanstead airport are clearing the crystal-blue HiMD disks.Last night (sunday night) there was about 15 disks remaining in one of the bargain bins - after I bought a few. The clearance price is 2.49 GBP per disk, at the tax-free rate. Up to now, I think that Dixons have been selling them for 5.99GBP on the high street (10 Euro in Ireland). Curiously, the disks are marked at 2.49GBP tax free and 2.99GBP with tax - it may therefore be the case that the disks are clearing for 2.99GBP on the high-street. Christopher
I wonder what's causing the massive exodus. Europe has always been a very strong market for Hi-MD, but Sony's erraticism has been very apparent as of late and is probably causing further market unrest. The future is not clear anymore, although..
KJ_Palmer
I checked Dixons (London, Oxford Street) for disks at the weekend, they were still going for £6.99 each. In a way, I hope that they could be bought more cheaply on the high street, though maybe not if that means the end of the line for Hi-MD... banjo
The commercial reality must be pointing to a rapid demise.
MDGB2
And I just bought 3 blue Hi-MDs off e-bay for £11. D'oh! Dixons is (usually) never the best place to go for media anyway, always over priced and little available. Only ever seen a handful of the old style discs around meadowhall and parkgate. No blues..... Still can get them on line from amazon (price has gone from £4.99 to £6.99 - weird!)Discountdiscs.co.uk stock them starting from £4.99 (but cheaper if you buy in quantity). Sparky191
I see lots of disks with HiMD compatible in big text and smaller writing you realise they are standard disks. I would be easy to make a mistake and buy them thinking they were HiMD. Its that kinda sly marketing that has turned people off MD. Beside no one want VHS tapes, they want a HD recorder. Likewise no one wants disks for their music player.
MDGB2
Likewise no one wants disks for their music player.I flamin' well do! Don't trust HD players, and 'flash' units too expensive for the storage you get.Although I'm the 'MTV generation' I'm 'old skool' when it comes to audio. Hell, I even enjoy recording in real time! Pity Sony don't get the mp3 compatibility issues sorted with Hi-MD, it would be just the same as a mp3 player, except you only have to pay £5 for 1GB of upgradable memory. May be a second coming...... Edited November 23, 2005 by MDGB2

I say you're because while I use MD/HiMD Having a bunch of disks does not appeal to me, and is not the attraction. In fact its a hassle. In fact its a hassle.I agree with you about carrying disks can be a hassle. I think my disc obsession comes from using them to record on for use 'at home.' Just a shame that you can't drag n drop 1GB of mp3s/atrac files (nearly 20 albums??) on to a player, hassle free. Would only ever need to carry one disc! Can dream for next generation.....if there is one.
greenshank
I see lots of disks with HiMD compatible in big text and smaller writing you realise they are standard disks. Their otherwise excellent clearance discounts on Hi-MDs say "Hi-MD Bundle Pack" and you have to look quite hard to realise that the bundled 10 discs are not actually 1GB.Oh, and "Supports all popular digital audio compression formats: ATRAC / MP3 / WMA / WAV" is highly misleading. Sure, it's talking about the Hi-MD format, but the actual units being sold don't. Edited November 24, 2005 by greenshank
