They took away my lps, they took away my cassettes and it’s looks like soon they are going to take away my beloved cds.

Their used to be a time when buying music to use with your latest hi fidelity player involved nothing more than simply matching the shape of the media with the shape of your player. These times, however, are sadly long gone. Now it’s all this digital mumbo jumbo, file extensions and copyright infringements.

This time I’m going to be ready for them though.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not a complete caveman. I own a computer, I surf the internet (obviously), I can send and receive email and enjoy the finer aspects of modern technology such as Half Life etc. but frankly digital music makes my brain cry.

Mp3s, Wav’s and Atrac’s ... its all French to me.

Reluctant to receive another Boss multi-sander for Christmas, this year I asked my girlfriend to buy me an Mp3 player. She starred at me blankly for she knew as much as me on the subject. And off to Comet we went, armed with nothing more than a single term subconsciously implanted into our minds by the modern marvel that is television… IPOD.

After an overly-long and totally unnecessary (much like this post) conversation with one of the numerous resident teenage “experts” I decide to go for the Ipod Nano. Just as I’m about to part with my hard earned cash I spot a glimmer of purple on the horizon of electrical goods. I squint to read the words “Sony Walkman”. Suddenly nostalgia streams over me, finally something I recognise! I ditched the Ipod.

So I’m now the proud owner of purple NWA1000 Sony Walkman Mp3 player. If only I knew how to use the bloody thing.

It feels all warm in here, think I might stick around. :D

I hope you enjoy your unit, but...

Being ready does not necessarily mean buying a Sony walkman :) Or an iPod for that matter (Dopi, as I like to call 'em). Sony, by all accounts, still has serious usability/software issues with their stuff, and as far as I can tell, CD isn't dying anytime soon, either. Even if you have hundreds of mp3s, they can all be converted to CD if that's your wish (and vice versa).

It all comes down to your needs. I hope your Walkman meets your needs. And if you buy tracks online, you know people are paying a premium for *less* than what we are getting with CD (sound quality certainly isn't going forward and the resale and nostalgia value of a downloaded track isn't exactly high). But what you do get is pretty instant gratification, but last I checked, the music store wasn't far away, either.
