Currently I am using an external drive from Western Digital, 80 gigs. It is AC powered with USB 2.0 and transfer rate is quite fast. Setup was a breeze and the drive powers down when not in use after some period of time, 10 or 30 minutes or even an hour, never really checked.

It never gets hots and it is quite and I can't hear it all when it is working, can't say the same for my internal drive. lol

One point of advice, go with brand name for the external drive, since you don't want it crashing on you. I am planning on picking up a 160 gig WD external in additon to the 80 gig I already have.
