Welcome to MDCF!

No reason to be sad! There is a (relatively) inexpensive unit that can do all you want. That would be the Sony MZ-NH700. It can record just about 94 minutes of Linear PCM audio from its mic input (or line-in/optical-in) and it can upload that to your PC.

I'd suggest look on ebay since you can usually can find a lower than retail price there.

Oops...sorry Chris, your replay came in while I was typing mine!

I'm searching for a MD with:

-Mic input

-The recording modes supported including: Linear (PCM) 44.1kHz/16-bit

-USB uploading & downloading with PC

HiMD suits your needs as you've listed them.

You can compare some models at the minidisc.org equipment browser.

There are also reviews and such here on the fora.

It also may be useful to skim through the essential HiMD info/FAQs forum. Some of what's there won't make sense unless you already have a unit to experiment with, but others, the upload FAQ in particular, can give an idea of how HiMD works.

What's your price range?

Cheers.

thanks for the answers

i come from Italy (sorry for my bad english)

i've asked here also to confirm that what i want exist.

The reason is that in 2 music shop of Rome (very famous) they told me that this type of MD does'nt exist.

In italian forums' say that against the "illegal copies" you can't find a MD with a good "recording mode" and the exporting data with USB in the same device.

It's really?

Your English is definitely better than my Italian. ;)

No, not really. Evidently these sales people don't know what they're talking about.

HiMD [2nd-generation] can record in three modes: HiLP [64kbps], HiSP [256kbps], and PCM [exactly the same format as CD audio, uncompressed]. You can upload recorded tracks using Sony's software, SonicStage. SonicStage itself isn't the most ideal software on earth, but considering the cost difference between HiMD and its nearest competitors, a few minutes extra work is definitely worth it.

-The exporting file is directly a *.wav?

First you upload the tracks to your computer with SonicStage. This makes a copy in Sony's proprietary [i.e. next to useless] format.

Then you export them to .wav and you can do with them as you please.

Check the uploading FAQ, more detailed answers are there.

-Any HiMD can be used like a litle Hard disk for any kind of data or depends on the type of HiMD?

Yes, it works as removable storage, but it's very slow.

To transfer your recorded tracks and export them as WAV, you {i]have to use the proprietary software sony provides called Sonic Stage. The latest version can be downloaded here.

A HiMD unit can store data. However, this cannot be used relating to any of the audio functions of HiMD, all audio must be moved by Sonic Stage (if you want to play on the unit...you can put audio files on there, but you won't be able to play them from the unit).

Hi

Thanks a lot

I've bought the sony MZ NH-700 (now I must sell my old MZ R70) :P

However,

I use the sonic stage 3.3 and I can convert my sounds project in the wav format to use them with my music software.

The Trouble is that I can't upload my sounds project from my PC to HI-MD and then from HI-MD to my notebook.

In the same way my records with the microphone can be downloaded only one time.

This limitation is not good because i work with 2 pc (home and notebook)

I'm not interesting to make illegal copies, but only to work with MY music,

can I do something?

Do you have an external USB or firewire hard drive?

Do you have a DVD burner?

Use those.

Put your WAV files on one of those those and transfer to your notebook.

Or, if you don't mind waiting for a long transfer, just get a 1GB Hi-MD disc and copy your converted *.WAV files to it as a regular data disc. Then, attach it to your notebook via USB and copy the WAV files to your notebook.

If you use Sony's SonicStage (or Simple Burner) to transfer the WAV(s) to your unit, they will be converted into Sony's proprietary rubbish so you can play it on the Hi-MD unit itself, but not transfer it easily to another device. Sony do this because they are paranoid about piracy.

PS. I would keep the MZ-R70 if I were you :) Selling a unit like that is just not worth it. They don't make 'em like that anymore. Pity it doesn't do linear PCM, tho :)

all that tekdroid said :P ...

and just to add... if you use SS3.3 on all machines, your own recordings can be uploaded from the original disc multiple (well, actually unlimited) times

but BEWARE: recordings already uploaded with any version before 3.3 will be erased if you try to upload them again
