akijikan
According to Engadget Microsoft will offer "coupons" (ie cash incentives) to Original Equipment Manufacturers who put HD-DVD drives in their machines. They also said that HD-DVD support in Vista will be free as opposed to a 30 dollar licensing fee for blu-ray.Since these hurdles are being added to Blu-Ray in the PC world, can sony keep the format alive long? Seems about all Blu-Ray has going for it right now is that it'll be the media format for the soon-to-be best selling video game platform. Bananatree
I dunno about "Soon to be best selling" but that will surely be a hit for the Blu-ray troupe. Think any VAIO computers will take advantage of the cash incentives?
Richard
There is also the fact that the majority of the major film studios in the end backed Blu-Ray over HD-DVD. Add to that the trojan horse effect of the PS3 that will put Blu-Ray into millions homes worldwide. Microsoft are I'm afraid just cluctching at straws on this one. Microsoft are I'm afraid just cluctching at straws on this one.Choose your words carefully! Not everyone reads all that well, they might interpret that as "The PS3 puts a virus in your house" I don't want to be using an inferior format because Richyhu posted something silly. You're entirely right, the fact that Movie Studios are chosing Blu-Ray is the clincher. However, maybe we'll see both formats? Computer Usage and Studio use? I can see how Studios would want a format that wouldn't be popular with computers, but I can't see it happening.

Yes I meant Trojan Horse in the clasical sense, although the virus terminology is of course referring to the same origin. Anyway what I meant was that because the PS3 will sell millions of units whatever happens, lots of people will already have Blu-Ray units in their houses already. Oh you know what I meant There was also this Blu-Ray unit from Pioneerhttp://www.engadget.com/2005/12/27/pioneer...ally-announced/And Panasonic has said that it will ship Blu-Ray optical drives for notebook and desktop computers by spring 2006 as well as 25- and 50-GB BD discs. Bananatree
I'm excited to see more from OEM's and to see what kind of support Apple gives their upcoming Intel Macs.A Power Mac with a Blu Ray burner would be heaven for a enthusiast of film.
