4-will i be able to upload any recorded live music to the pc and how many times? can i burn it to a cd after that?

5-can i record on normal md's with this unit?

6-What is DRM?

7-what is a bit rate and how does it effect the way i can download mp3 to the unit?

8-with a optical line in, how many minutes of music from a cd can i put into one hi-md?

what do you mean when you say second generation unit? what is the third generation is suppoused to do more and when are they expected to come out?

a quick reply...

1) Yes

2) PCM =.wav, uncompressed audio like what you get on a CD

3) The same ways as your old unit, mic input or line in

4) Yes, unlimited times with sonicstage 3.3

5) No you need a first Gen unit for this e.g NH1. You can record normal MD's but only in sonicstage, so LP2 and LP4 quality

6) DRM = Digital rights management, not much of an issue as sony give you the option to rip CD's without it in the latest sonicstage

7) Bitrate = music quality and space. 64kbs is worse quality but you can fit more songs on a disc than 256kbs

8) 1 1/2 hours in PCM, 8 hours in HISP, ~34 hours in HILP

9) Second gen units can play back mp3s without the need to convert them to the atrac (Minidisc) format

hope this helps, matt

Quick notes on Matt J's reply:

3) sonicstage, simpleburner... also the optical in.

4) you can only upload HiMD recordings that you've made on your HiMD recorder. In other words you won't be able to upload your old MD recordings.

5) you can use normal MD's in HiMD mode with any HiMD model. With 1st gen models you can record legacy (LP2/LP4) directly on the unit... 2nd gen models need sonicstage to record in legacy modes. The RH10 is a 2nd generation, so it lacks the legacy recording modes on the unit itself.

1st-gen recorders also record in true SP mode, in real time, via analogue or optical in.

Note that this only applies with legacy MDs, with the unit in netMD mode.

The same applies with LP2 and LP4 modes in realtime.

SonicStage can write to either HiMD or legacy [neMD] mode discs in true LP2 [132kbps], LP3 [105kbps] or LP4 [66kbps] modes as well. There is also a compatibility mode that writes pseudo-SP, which is LP2 padded out to fit the SP data rate, which means you can play it on older legacy decks [such as in your car] but the quality is only that of LP2.

Pseudo-SP mode is available only to be written to netMD-mode discs.
