its called redundancy if you can upgrade and improve your existing product then there is no need to buy a new one = sony losing money on new products.

it's like the way the new ipod can play videos but the old one can't. sort of....

Lol.If thats the case then why Sony upgraded NW-HD1 with Mp3 compatibilities & other things.

Sadly it will never happen because HD5 has no wma decoder. Sony used for HD5 there own processor (CXR704060-201GA) which has no wma support.

Btw it’s the same processor for E400/E500 and A600.

In case of A600 sony added a wma decoder chip (IC 601 / LC823231N) to have wma support

This chip is missing in HD5,E400 and E500 series. (and it’s not possible to add it)

For the new A1000/3000 Sony used a new audio processor form Freescale (IC 6005 / SCF5250)

This audio processor has a lot of features like WMA support (incl. DRM), lossless Codec (Flac,Ogg) support or even JPEG and Video function.

I hope sony will enable some more codec in the future

For more information check out the website : http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/p...rH3YTLC00M93109

Thanks for that. The chip is rather impressive with huge possibilites now that I look at it. If all that is in the chip, perhaps it is only a matter of time before sony begins turning on the options.

Anyone know if the OLED in the A series hDD can be changed from one colour to multi? or does it need a new OLED with colour?
