unignal
Since all these models are using the same 60ohm driver, is it safe to say that i just have to spend a tiny bit of money on the cheapest among them KSC 35 and i will get the same sound quality as the legengary Koss PortaPro.A friend of mine has been bugging me recently about the fact that his KSC 75 sound as good as my PortaPro and i'm foolish to spend so much on it.Can someone please enlighten me on this? A440
I'm not sure it's the same driver, even if they're all 600 ohms. I have PortaPros and SportaPros, and they do not sound the same. The PortaPros are clearly better. Have you tried the KSC 75's in a direct comparison with the PortaPro? And are you listening to something hi-fi (that is, not a 128 kpbs mp3)? sonic_rage
Even though the ksc 35/50/55/75, Portapro, Sportapro, UR40 use the same legendary 60 ohm driver they all differ in sound. They all generally have good sound, but there are noticeable differences. Also KSC 35s dont come cheap anymore now that theyre discontinued and highly regarded by many audio enthusiasts. You'll probably have better luck finding cheaper 75s. I have seen many mods done using these drivers and ive tried one myself using cheap ksc50s that i found on ebay for 5 bucks and put them on an open set of headphones that make it sound better, or at least sound more like a porta, since there's more pressure against the ear.If you can spend around 40 bucks then stick with the portapros. unignal
Thank you for the insightful reply. I'll ask my friend to read it so that he can be convinced. Btw, i'm currently enjoying my PortaPro with Sony MZ-NH900. Extremely happy with this combination. The sound is just prefect. I'll be happier if i can afford the Hi-MD photo model though. The price is too high. But i heard its sounds better than a MZ-NH900/
mercury_in_flames
Imo, I dont think that would be the case lol, I havent tried both of these units, but I am inclined to think this as they have the same amp in them, headphone output, and e.q dont they? Besides, if you just want it for 'better' sound, then dont get the camera one, i dont think it would sound THAT much better to warrant getting that when you have a perfectly good himd already. If you want better sound, maybe a dedicated portable himd player would be a better option?

Damage
Generally, it would share some characteristics, but it would not sound exactly the same. Chalk it up to the driver housing used, some uses rounded cups, other uses flat housing, Porta Pros uses almost nothing, etc.The SR40s and the SR60s by Grado purportedly use the same drivers. However, because of the difference in housing shape (SR40s has a cuppish thing whereas the SR60s are totally open), the sound quality ends up being different for both 40s and the 60s.
