Ezra4no1
Well I use to be heavily into the MiniDisc world some years ago, but sold everything because of my frustrations with Sony's DRM restrictions. When many of the HDD Mp3 playes came with literally no restrictions and ease of drag and drop, that just seemed like a better way to go.Well.... Here I am years later and I am hearing about Sony's 2nd Gen Hi-MDs and the new SS 3.4 which seems to be big improvement from the ways of the older MDs and I just so happen to be in the market to buy a new Audio Recorder/Player.My questions....After looking through the message boards, I have failed to find anyone give a good description of this. I am aware of the quality of Sony's ATRAC, but was wondering how well does HI-MDs play Mp3s? I have a very large collection of mp3s and don't want to have to convert them over to ATRAC and from what I am gaterhing, 2nd Gen Hi-MDs can play Mp3s directly without converting them to ATRAC..Is this correct? If so, also heard that playing Mp3s on the 2nd Gen Hi-Mds leaves alot to be desired.. Can anyone give their opinion of this? Of course ATRAC will be better depending how it was recorded, but do Mp3s sound any worse on HI-Mds or are they the same as an MP3 being played on any other Mp3 Player?Also... How can I tell the difference between 2nd Gen HI-MDs and 1st Gen Hi-MDs?I would like to use Hi-Mds for music listening and for Live recordings..Thanks for any info. Berke
This was what I was wondering as well, about the mp3 playback quality. Actually there are some topics on the forum on this issue, but I'm too tired to pick them and put them here. (when I searched mp3 in the forum nothing came up although I know it "is" there). Also I'd like to know which models were the 1st gen and which models are the 2nd gen?.Thank you. That said, I find the inconvenience of its less than perfect playback to be far outweighed by the convenience of not having to transcode a lot of my existing library. Still, if what you want is perfect MP3 playback quality without transcoding or de-emphasis or any BS - go with another player.First gen portable models start with NH; second gen models start with RH [the one exception being the DH10P which is also a camera]. Are they 3rd gen or also 2nd gen? Is there any significance between the NH models and the MZ models? Cheers Edit: Wow your (RH10) review is very intensive! Good Job! Roamer
There is only 2 MZ units among the HiMDs : the MZ-M10 and MZ-M100 . They are like the RH10 and RH910 (so 2nd gen. units), but with support for PCM upload on the Mac (and so the only units with some limited support for the Mac). They are also more expensive than the RH10 and RH910, so they are mainly interesting for Mac users.

batfastad
I use my MZ RH10 as an mp3 player all the time. Can't say I've noticed a difference from my old mp3 player.I've never really bothered with the LP formats, most of my old-style MDs are all 74/80 min SP.They do sound much better than mp3s though.I don't think there's anything to worry about with regards to mp3 quality. All sony minidisc players have MZ before their model number, both HIMD and normal MD. e.g the RH10's full title is MZ-RH10. Just nitpicking here sorry! dex Otaku
d = dousn't recordI'm pretty sure d stands for 'downloader' but that's an interesting take on it. I think I like it better than "downloader", actually. "The North American MZ NH-600 doesn't," has a ring to it.
