Sony_Fan
I showed a friend of mine my RH10 and he was amazed at the CD quality sound (Hi-SP) of the unit. He also thought it was great that you can record on 1GB discs that are so small and convenient. Of course, he's not an iPod fan so that may have helped in convincing him to get one and he says he will in 2 weeks. Pretty cool!
danielbb90
People are sheep! My brother was looking at getting one until he found out Ipod was the dominating pautable audio devise! Now he dousn't like minidisc atall anymore and he hasn't got an ipod either - His excuse is that he only has 2 cd's lol.But if people didn't follow the majority Hi-MD might have a chance! jaylen
People are sheep! My brother was looking at getting one until he found out Ipod was the dominating pautable audio devise!Although a lot of iPod buys were probably driven by what's popular, I think a lot of people now prefer to (or for convenience, have to) carry their entire music collection in 1 unit instead of carrying around discs or having to make them. To each his/her own.I love my iPod (black 60GB 5G, was a gift), but I still love my MD units. But if people didn't follow the majority Hi-MD might have a chance! With Hi-MD, sure I think it's partly the iPod/iRiver/iWhatever craze, but mainly, I just don't think the word is out as much as we'd like. I've met a lot of people who have never heard of Hi-MD (and one was a former MS702/R900/R500 owner).
A440
MD or even Hi-MD are never going to compete with portable flash or HD players. They're just too big, and SonicStage is too awkward. If I didn't use mine for recording, I would never have considered it for a portable player. I don't know if I would have gotten an Ipod because I, too, hate being one of the mob, but with so many other good little choices, why bother to deal with minidisc quirks? Still, when someone drops their 60GB player and their entire collection goes with it, then we can gloat over our removable media.
jaylen
Still, when someone drops their 60GB player and their entire collection goes with it, then we can gloat over our removable media.Do you think iPod people gloated when a lot of those N1 optical heads went bad? Or did they feel any envy or jealousy when SonicStage 3.4 came out? Honestly, I don't think they knew or would even care. So when someone does drop their only portable means of accessing their music, I don't see why you'd feel the need to gloat over MD.
A440
I don't see why you'd feel the need to gloat over MD. Dude, I was being hyperbolic. Exaggerating. I feel no such need. MD is obviously not the playback device of choice for the vast public, and for very good reasons.I don't harbor any delusions of MD (or Hi-MD) as a challenge to the Ipod. There's no meaningful rivalry between Ipod and MD because Ipod is by now pretty much synonymous with portable players (even if there are better ones). As far as I'm concerned, MD and Ipod are for two entirely different purposes: recording and playback.

garcou
but for playback in audiophile purpose (deck at home) and in car, Himd is better than Ipod. Edited March 5, 2006 by garcou

So for me, the purpose is recording and playback. The digital recording and digital playback through a lense seems/sounds more like CD quality than music stored in HD or flash cards. On top of that, I believe ATRAC3plus does offer better sound quality than MP3s at the same bitrate.
Soren
Buying Hi-MD is still a better choice then iPod Nano and iPod mini for listening purposes.
billymisfits
i purchased my hi-md so that i could record in PCM. PCM is pretty shweet. now if iPods had PCM recording capablities and removeable ion litium battery packs then i would most definately go with the ipods. i don't understand why ipods don't have PCM. its seems perfectly do-able. i must admit though that having to manage all these md discs can be pretty cumbersome at times. and md players do have a lot of inconvenient restrictions. both md players and iPods have there pros and cons. i'm sure some day in the future there will be music players that will have the best of both worlds, but until then my md player will have to sufice. MDGB2
I do use an mp3 player for work (it cost £8 - NEW!!!) an its ok in someways but can't really compare to Hi-MD. Even though I can now get a 512mb SD card for it for £17.99 (which is very cheap) thats nearly 3 1GB discs (off e-bay anyway). If any new units come I may start to use my NH600 for work, but at the mo its my backup for the NH700 incase the format does stop. I dunno why else I prefer Hi-MD, maybe I'm just old fashioned. I don't like the idea of Li-Ion batteries becasue I know they fail and are expensive to replace. Mechanical media just seems more reliable/convenient than HD/flash. I suppose when you grow up spending loads of time recording yer own music onto cassette and later MD you don't want to stop and settle for just transferring/downloading files. More fun to do yer own thing rather than click some icons on a computer screen. Edited March 5, 2006 by MDGB2

atye
Well, this is my first post! I've got some history with MD. I've had 2 decks and transfered lots of records, tapes, etc.But I was ready to buy an mp3 player recently until I learned I needed to do some live recording.Honestly, if it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have bought my new recorder. (MZ-RH910)I really like it though, and I think it will keep me from getting an mp3 player for now. I'm still figuring out the software/hardware issues. The biggest gripe right now is the speed. Changing tracks take way longer than I thought it would, but I guess that's fairly minor.
